Alcove Centre for the Arts (Alcove) is a non-profit organization in Calgary, Alberta, aiming to increase accessibility to the arts by offering workshops, artistic showcases and a creative social space AKA drop-in art space.

Alcove is currently located in downtown Calgary (244 7 Ave. SW) and offers workshops, live events and a community space for people to hang out, socialize and get creative. As a volunteer, you will help make Alcove a vibrant and welcoming space!

Objective: Volunteers are an integral part of Alcove. Volunteers play an important role in helping manage our Drop-In Space and events.

Volunteer Role

Volunteers will engage in supporting the Art Space during events and workshops, facilitating community building and informing guests about our space and programs.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Front-desk reception to greet guests and explain how the space works what is Alcove.
  • Ensure visitors are following Space Guidelines and maintaining a safe and respectable environment.
  • Maintain tidiness/cleanliness of the space including putting art supplies in their proper stations, sweeping, throwing out garbage left on counters, etc.
  • Track inventory for art supplies that are signed out.
  • Handling cash or electronic transactions for donations, workshop fees, etc.
  • Helping with miscellaneous tasks such as organizing/moving supply bins, checking/preparing art supplies, etc.
  • Supporting events including event setup/takedown (setting up chairs, tables, etc.), monitoring doors, accepting donations, cleanup, etc.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • There are no previous experience requirements, however we seek people who can commit to a minimum of 5 hours a month of volunteer hours, are responsible, proactive and friendly.
  • Given the activities at Alcove, volunteers must be comfortable with high sound volume, including but not limited to loud drums and speakers.
  • Volunteers must have the capacity to fully participate in the volunteer program, completing a minimum of 5 hours of volunteer work a month.
  • Volunteers must complete the number of hours assigned to them for the season. This means if a volunteer is not able to complete one of their assigned shifts, they must complete their volunteer hours by taking another shift.
  • Volunteers must attend the volunteer training and orientation.
  • Volunteers must complete a police background check, paid by Alcove.
  • Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Each volunteer shift is 2.5 hours (150 minutes total).
  • Alcove’s volunteer program is based on a weekly and biweekly schedule, set for the entire volunteer season.
