Senior Recording Engineer

The Opportunity

The senior recording engineer is responsible for planning, execution and delivery of all music and audio recordings and post-production objectives and deliverables in support of Banff Centre programming and departmental activities.

The incumbent’s main responsibilities also include engineering of internal and external recording projects as required and assigned, communicating directly with internal and external stakeholders and artists, and making creative suggestions that impact the final outcome of the project.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to senior technical producer, below are some key accountabilities:

Audio recording projects:

  • Oversee internal and external recording projects on an ongoing basis. Several hundred projects will be undertaken throughout the year and will include live and studio recording sessions (including CD, demo and concert recordings), and Banff Centre collaborative live, online, streaming, broadcast and digital cinema projects. In addition, this position will undertake editing, mixing, mastering and sound design.
  • Provide expertise to practicum/staff audio engineers on all audio projects. Deliver all audio production projects to required specification and standards, communicating directly with artists and staff across all Banff Centre departments.
  • Provide detailed recording schedules, time reporting and project budgets on a consistent basis.

Program support:

  • Provide day to day support to all Banff Centre programs and projects as assigned.
  • Provide guidance to practicum participants and clients with regard to facilities, artistic goals and quality control of projects.
  • Provide accurate and timely technical assessments of prospective artistic projects from arts programming, both internal and external.
  • Provide expertise and support on larger Banff Centre productions and post-productions as needed.

Practicum program:

Assist in design of long- and short-term goals for audio practicum participants, aligning practicum participant learning components, learning goals and hands-on experiences with the diverse audio-related opportunities coming from arts programming, other Banff Centre departments, and from external stakeholders.

Adjudicate practicum participant applications and faculty in consultation with Banff Centre adjudication team and Banff Centre audio stakeholders.

General:

  • Collaborate in planning and execution of studio maintenance with the media and production team.
  • Keep audio studios in good working order, undertaking simple maintenance tasks.
  • Provide expertise and suggestion on capital purchases and annual operational requirements.
  • Provide key input to the wider Production Services team to build integrated processes and workflows for pan production services activities and projects.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

  • Ability to work self-directed at a professional level in all studios with a proven track record of success in recording engineering.
  •  A graduate degree in sound recording or equivalent experience.
  • At least five years of recognized professional experience in the production and engineering of professional recordings.
  • Five years of mentoring at a recognized audio institution is preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of modern sound recording technologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise using Pro Tools and other DAWs, analog and digital consoles, wide range of microphone types and techniques, outboard and plug-in processing, established and emerging delivery and playback formats, advanced computer skills in Mac and Windows environments.
  • Expert knowledge of the latest recording techniques for music, and professional knowledge of audio post-production and alternate media.
  • Able to thrive in a consultative, team environment.
  • Possessing strong written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.

Special Requirements: Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

Employment Terms and Benefits:

  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, salaried support staff position, subject to a 6-month probation period.
  • The annual salary for this position is $77,459.20 based on working 40 hours per week.
  • The successful candidate will have access to a range of benefits through Alberta Blue Cross and will be eligible to participate in our defined benefit pension plan.
