The Screaming Goats Collective invites proposals from Calgary circus arts community and beyond for an opportunity to try out a new work-in-progress that aims to answer the question: What is Circus?.

Works-in-progress, ranging from 2 – 5 minutes in length will be presented in a cabaret format in front of a live audience on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Participants will be expected to attend a virtual meeting (date TBD) and mandatory in-person tech rehearsal for one hour, the day of the cabaret.

Our hope is that this cabaret will not only provide local circus artists an opportunity to showcase their work, but will also strengthen our circus community while challenging the notion of what circus arts can be. Performers will have an opportunity to try out new material, while gaining valuable audience feedback during a post-show talk back.

We are welcoming applications from any circus medium including, but is not limited to, aerials (including silks, loop, hoop, straps, static trapeze), hand-to-hand, hand balancing, object manipulation, contortion, magic and clown, in addition to theatre, dance, music and inter-disciplinary works.

Artists must supply their own circus equipment. Circus equipment must meet industry safety standards. Aerial acts are limited to 18 feet.

Requests for additional support and resources will be considered on a case by case basis.

Compensation

By participating in the cabaret artists will gain:

  • A percentage of ticket sales revenue
  • Professional photos and video for future promotion of their work
  • Audience feedback
  • A safe space to experiment and try new material
  • A connection with the broader artistic community

We cannot provide accommodation or living subsidies for out-of-town artists interested in applying.

Application Proposals Should Include the Following:

  • A short project description including the artistic discipline and how they intend to answer the question: What is Circus?; and perhaps a further, future goal for the project.
  • A brief artistic bio
  • A description of any technical needs you anticipate.

Applicants are encouraged to reach out to The Screaming Goats Collective to discuss their proposal in advance. Please contact Leda Davies at screaminggoatscollective@gmail.com or Anne-Marie Hivert at annemarie.hivert@gmail.com.

We encourage applications from BIPOC, queer, disability/mad, and early career artists. The Screaming Goats Collective also acknowledges and supports the work of the 35//50 Initiative. This initiative prioritizes work that upholds the balance of projects having 35% BIPOC identified artists, and 50% women/non-binary artists/trans/intersex artists.

If these guidelines provide any barriers, please reach out to screaminggoatscollective@gmail.com and we would be happy to discuss an alternative application process.

Please direct all inquiries and proposals to Leda Davies at screaminggoatscollective@gmail.com by February 1, 2024, at 11:59pm.

Successful candidates will be contacted by February 9, 2024.
