TRUCK Contemporary Art

TRUCK Contemporary Art is a non-profit artist-run centre dedicated to the development and public presentation of contemporary art. Established in 1983 as The Second Story Art Society, TRUCK provides a forum for the production and dissemination of contemporary art and related cultural practices in Calgary, on Treaty 7 territory in the Southern Alberta region. TRUCK supports artists and artistic communities through exhibition programming, lectures, screenings, performances, publications, commissions, off-site and public programs, residencies, community collaborations, engagement and outreach, and advocacy activities.

Our exhibitions and public programming initiatives aim to connect the artistic community in Calgary, to global discourses on contemporary art, national partners in the artist-run sector, and the general public. Our goal is the advancement of contemporary art and the enrichment of local, national, and international communities today and into the future.

Where You Can Contribute:

  • TRUCK Contemporary Art is looking to grow our board of directors to support our operations and ensure our continued success. We are seeking dedicated individuals who are interested in joining our volunteer board of directors for a two-year term (renewable).
  • Volunteer board members are responsible for helping guide the organization’s decisions and maintain good governance. Board members are expected to contribute 5 – 8 hours per month, depending on committee or executive roles, and including TRUCK’s upcoming strategic planning cycle.
  • Knowledge and experience in accounting, grant management, human resources, board governance are all skill sets that would add value, but we are open to various types of experience. As we are an artist-run centre, those involved in the arts are welcomed and encouraged as well.

Our current goals as an organization are to put more focus on locally-based artists, to support emerging and early-career artists along with those with more established careers and to provide more mutual aid through initiatives such as F.U.E.L. (Free Utensils for Expressive Living).

Members of the board are accountable to the board, staff and membership, and hold fiduciary responsibility to municipal, provincial and federal governing bodies and granting agencies.

Board Member Responsibilities:

  • Attend a minimum of one board meeting per month (typically the third Tuesday of each month), with each meeting being approximately 1.5 – 2 hours.
  • Read minutes and reports for all board meetings, staying informed on the business of the organization and participating in all policy and operational discussions.
  • Be available to board members and staff by phone and email.
  • Actively participate in TRUCK’s committees and strategic planning cycle.
  • Use your unique expertise to contribute to TRUCK’s mission and vision.
