Call for Entry: The Stein Show

Alberta Potters’ Association

Application closes: August 15, 2025 at 11:59pm
Show date: September 27, 2025

The Alberta Potters’ Association invites you to apply for our 2025 juried exhibition, The Stein Show. Please apply with any ceramic stein, hand built or thrown, to our exhibition. To be considered, work must be minimum 75% ceramic. All steins entered into the show must be for sale.

You may submit up to five (5) pieces, one stein per submission. Submission fee is non-refundable and per entry.

This is a juried show, and works submitted are not guaranteed to be accepted. There will be three jurors who will form our jury committee.

Judges are asked to review the steins on the following criteria:

  • Originality: Is there something fresh and new about the content? Is the work individual and/or personal in its approach?
  • Creative Expression: Is the piece memorable? Move you in an emotional or intellectual way? Challenge your thinking? Leave a lasting impression?
  • Technical Skill: Does the piece reflect high quality technical skill?
  • Surface Design: Interesting/Creative techniques used? Is the composition well considered?
  • Photo Quality: Is the image of the Stein clear? Is the background of the image clean and not busy? Do you have multiple images of different angles of your Stein?

Wheel Thrown Category: Majority of the vessel must be created on the wheel to be considered for this category. Jurors reserve the right to not accept the piece once it has been viewed in person.

Hand Built Category: The vessel must be constructed using primarily hand built methods. Jurors reserve the right to not accept the piece once it has been viewed in person.

Student Category: Steins can be wheel thrown or handbuilt but are made by a student. We consider a student someone who is attending a creditable post-secondary school (ex. Alberta University of the Arts, Red Deer Polytechnic, etc.) and/or currently taking classes at a studio for 5 years or less.

This event will coincide with Oktoberfest of 2025. All steins entered into the show must be for sale. The consignment split for sold items is 30% to the APA and 70% to the artist.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event at Village Brewery in Calgary, Alberta on September 27, from 5-9pm.

Artists will be notified of their acceptance or rejection to the show by August 30. Physical items must be mailed or delivered by September 20, 2025. Items must arrive packed appropriately in a box ready for transport. Drop off location will be provided if you are accepted into the show.

The four judged categories are: (1) Best Wheel Thrown Stein (2) Best Hand Built Stein (3) Best Student Stein and (4) People’s Choice. People’s choice award is chosen by guests at the event and the Village Brewery Staff. Prizes for each of these categories will be given out during the show if the winner is in attendance or mailed out after the show. Prizes TBA.

Unsold work from the in-person event will be returned to the artist. APA will pay shipping on domestic shipping returning the item to the artist. Artists outside Canada are to arrange shipping and cover costs. Local artists will work with APA to pick up work.
