The Department of Canadian Heritage is seeking a dynamic, impactful image that conveys the theme Singular Plurality. This is Canada’s theme as Guest of Honor of this year’s edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair, taking place in October 2020.
The Frankfurt Book Fair attracts some 275,000 visitors and 10,000 media representatives each year—a unique opportunity to share the best of Canadian literary culture with the world. Canadian Heritage is marking this event by showcasing original works of art by young Canadian artists on two prominently located staircases in Ottawa’s downtown core.
The theme Singular Plurality reflects Canada’s multitude of peoples, cultures and landscapes. Frankfurt 2020 will celebrate our diversity and show that through the creativity of authors and artists alike, we can learn about and better understand each other, appreciating our differences and finding similarities between us.
The winning images will be reproduced on exterior-quality graphic film and installed on the York Street Steps and the Plaza Bridge Steps in Ottawa for a one-year period starting in spring 2019.
The deadline for submissions is March 25, 2020, at 4:00pm EDT.
This call for proposals is open to all Canadian visual artists, photographers, graphic designers and illustrators between the ages of 18 and 35. All genres will be considered—figurative, abstract, collage, trompe l’oeil, optical illusion, pattern, etc. The winning artist for each staircase will receive a fee of $3,000 for the exhibition of their artwork.
If you would like to receive the competition documents to prepare your submission, please email pch.artpublic-publicart.pch@canada.ca with the subject line Singular Plurality.
