Living Hyphen is an emerging magazine that explores the experiences of hyphenated Canadians—that is, individuals who call “Canada” home but with roots elsewhere.
We’re now accepting submissions for our second issue with the theme of Across Generations. Do you or someone you know have an intergenerational story about living in between cultures?
Submit by February 25, 2020.
We accept poetry, short stories and other creative writing, essays, illustrations, and photography. This is a paid opportunity for Canadian artists and writers of all experience levels—amateur, emerging, or established!

We’re looking for stories of your ancestors. Of your lineage. Of the memories and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. And how all of that influences your present. Most importantly, we invite you to open up these conversations with your loved ones, your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, children, and grandchildren and capture that in your submission. We want to weave stories with voices from across generations—literally!
Our mission at Living Hyphen is to amplify voices that often go unheard and we especially encourage and prioritize submissions from members of diverse communities, including Indigenous writers and artists, writers and artists of colour, writers and artists with disabilities, writers and artists from the LGBTQ2S+ community, and writers and artists who identify with other marginalized groups.
We also appreciate submissions from non-marginalized artists and writers for a fulsome representation of the hyphenated Canadian experience but note that these submissions will never dominate our magazine.
