Call for Writers and Artists

New Tribe Magazine | Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth

Deadline to submit: April 30, 2025
Theme: Indigenous Fashion (It’s Not a Trend—It’s a Reclamation)

New Tribe Magazine is now accepting pitches and submissions for our upcoming issue centred on Indigenous fashion — a space where artistry meets ancestry, resistance fuels resurgence and style becomes sovereignty.

We’re looking for writers, storytellers, cultural commentators, designers, knowledge keepers and community voices to contribute thoughtful, original content that reflects the depth and power of Indigenous fashion.

This issue may explore:

  • Indigenous fashion as reclamation, resurgence and resistance
  • Beadwork, textiles and regalia as cultural archives and living art
  • Profiles of Indigenous designers, artists and makers
  • Local/National/Global based fashion movements
  • The line between appreciation and appropriation
  • Non-Indigenous uptake of Indigenous aesthetics in mainstream fashion
  • Sustainability, land-based practices and fashion as ceremony
  • Youth, gender and Two-Spirit expression through fashion
  • Fashion shows, community-based projects and intergenerational transmission of knowledge

Who should submit?

We welcome young Indigenous writers from all Nations and backgrounds, especially emerging voices.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Pitches (short proposals) on a topic above provided or another topic
  • Poetry, visual stories, and photo essays also encouraged

For questions and to submit email newtribe@usay.ca.

This is a paid opportunity. All confirmed contributors will be compensated for their work.

Let’s honour the roots, celebrate the resurgence, and stitch together a story that speaks to past, present, and future through the lens of Indigenous fashion.
