The Columbia Valley Arts Council has served the citizens of the Columbia Valley since 1976—a beautiful part of British Columbia, rich in spirit, respect and support of the arts. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains to the east and the Purcell range to the west, our home base is located in Invermere, BC, on the northern shores of Lake Windermere, housed in the historical treasure, The Pynelogs Cultural Centre.

We take our vision and mission statement seriously—we bring arts to the people- and the people to the arts. We strive to build a strong sense of community, through the provision of performing and visual arts. We support our artistic community by mentoring, connecting, providing a platform and linking to resources in and beyond our region.

All community residents (including our half time residents and visitors of all ages—the majority being from Alberta), have the opportunity to experience culture, both as a participant and by attending our many performances, events, festivals and art shows. Our longstanding partnerships with schools, businesses and agencies have enabled us to expand our programs and services—but we know we can do better.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced leader, in the role of executive director, who can inspire us to expand our reach. Reporting to and actively collaborating with the society’s board of directors, you value all cultural activities and will support our region’s vitality by building awareness of the benefits that come through a vibrant cultural community.

You are an initiator; an excellent communicator; an advocate of the arts; and you believe in and work with strong community partnerships. At the same time, you bring sound operational skills that a historical facility requires, including rentals and a seasonal (contract) restaurant.

You are politically sensitive and work well within a not for profit realm by providing support to the society’s board of directors, and as required, with elected officials and government administrators. You have strong organizational abilities with excellent interpersonal, sound decision making, financial, governance, event programming, and strategic planning skills.


  • To inspire and lead—focused on achieving the organization’s vision, goals, and objectives and working well with a volunteer board of directors (within a hybrid governance model).
  • Working with a grants writer, to provide budgets, assist in the research and the writing of compelling grant applications to multiple funding agencies.
  • Through strong administrative and leadership skills: Providing oversight for financial processes; supervising and supporting the society’s human resources (paid, contract and volunteer), building maintenance and lifecycle, project management, and file management—including documenting, tracking and reporting.
  • Excellent communications and marketing skills, including experience with web (WordPress) and digital media tools.
  • Proven success building community support through public relations, advocacy and fundraising to provide inclusive and diverse events, programs and workshops.
  • Working with the board of directors in the development of effective operational policies and best practices


  • A Bachelor’s degree or relevant diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to management in arts and culture.
  • Work experience of three to eight years for a not-for-profit (arts and culture) in a managerial supervisory position without a degree or diploma will be considered.
  • In-depth understanding of business operations.
  • Experience as a consensus builder and a motivator.
  • Strong and proven experience in fundraising for non-profit organizations.

Remuneration: $48,000 – $55,000 commensurate upon experience and education
Plus a competitive benefits package (includes health and dental) cell phone and car mileage, two-weeks vacation and five days in lieu of stats.
