Who: Calling all adult fools and those who love them (some performance experience preferred).
What: The Art of Commedia Dell’arte. Imagine the market places of Italy in the 1520s where Zanni characters with half masks improvised and dominated European Theatre. The Commedia dell’Arte has been and always will be the first of the arts of the theatre. Nowadays we draw from its history to maintain its presence in modern physical theatre.
Explore the basic techniques actors use in creating Commedia dell’ Arte: Improvisation, slapstick comedy, status, and masked characterization. Discover the walks, gestures, and voices of six of the stock characters. Expressing one of the characters and using a plot outline, players will improvise a scenario with a partner.
Discover why Commedia dell’Arte is one of the most important sources of storytelling, comedy and physical theatre styles. Understand why physical humour is such an important tool for communication, for either on or offstage.
Dates: Sundays, 6:00 – 9:00pm from October 20 – December 8, 2019 (no class November 10, 2019)
Cost:
- Discount = $210/player, if registered by October 7, 2019
- Students or members of Calgary Acts or Regular = $240/player

Investment includes seven classes x three hours/class = 21 hours.
