Dance Residency: Final Tuning

Winter 2024

The Final Tuning dance residency provides two choreographers or dance companies with the time, space and resources to advance an already developed work to the next stage.

Selected companies will receive access to a Banff Centre dance studio for three weeks to work on adjusting and solidifying their proposed project. During the second and third weeks, artists will have access to Banff Centre’s Jenny Belzberg Theatre, to begin implementing technical elements into their projects. Both companies will be given the opportunity to present their work or work-in-progress to the public at the end of the program.

What does the program offer?

Selected projects will work with Banff Centre’s dance faculty and production teams to apply final production elements to their work.

Pending the needs of the submitted projects, Banff Centre will have the following positions available to assist the projects:

  • Banff Centre stage manager (this stage manager can act as assistant stage manager for the projects if projects are bringing their own stage manager)
  • Head of lighting and assistant head of lighting
  • Head of sound and assistant head of sound
  • Head stage carpenter and assistant stage carpenter
  • Head of projection
  • Wardrobe facilitator
  • Scenic shop builder
  • Props coordinator
  • Hair/Makeup coordinator (available for the final week of the program)

You will enjoy hands-on engagement with the faculty — dramaturgy, choreography, sound composition, and other design — to assist in putting together your final project. You will have the opportunity to fine-tune your work in progress and present a final production for a public audience.

Lastly, you will have access to professional production photographs of your project to add to your portfolio.

Who should apply?

Emerging and/or established choreographers and dance companies seeking to work on the finishing touches of their projects. This project and choreography should be almost entirely developed and ready for layering in elements of lights, projections, sound, etc. for a production on the Jenny Belzberg stage. Final Tuning invites applications from anywhere in the world, and artists of all ages, backgrounds, gender identities and expressions.

Please note:

Selected company members will be required to work with the faculty for the duration of the program.

Selected companies and choreographers will be asked to lead one morning warm up for all Final Tuning residency members as well as one talk about their project and process.

We encourage larger ensembles bringing more than five artists to apply.

It is highly advised that you consider bringing a stage manager, technical director, lighting designer, and sound designer/composer to participate in your residency.
