Demystifying the Business of Books

An Interactive Webinar Series

Date: Begins January 31, 2023
Cost: Free with registration

What kinds of roles exist in publishing? And what do they involve day to day?

The Canadian Publishers’ Council is opening our doors to introduce you to some of our colleagues from different publishing companies who all work in the creation of books, from design to editorial to distribution. A career in publishing is both challenging and rewarding. It combines a love of books with a keen sense of business and offers a variety of work environments in large or small publishers, with interests ranging from literary to academic, children’s, educational, and commercial. Speakers will cover a wide range of experience from various trade and educational publishing houses across Canada, including Penguin Random House Canada, HarperCollins Canada, Simon & Schuster Canada, Oxford University Press, Wiley, Scholastic and more.

Doors Open Publishing is an interactive webinar series curated by the Canadian Publishers’ Council in a commitment to transparency, accessibility and diversity within Canadian publishing. We welcome all participants, including those who identify with communities that are traditionally underrepresented in the Canadian publishing industry including, but not limited to, those who identify as Black, Indigenous or people of colour; members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community; and persons with disabilities.

This webinar series will:

  • Provide an overview of a wide range of publishing departments, including editorial, sales, marketing, contracts and permissions, digital, and more, from industry professionals of all levels of experience, before entering an interactive Q&A session.
  • Promote publishing as a career option to those just starting their careers, those looking for a career change, and anyone who previously believed that publishing didn’t hold a space for them.
  • Demystify the publishing industry in order to foster a more inclusive Canadian publishing landscape for years to come.
