Get your ideas out of your head and create your “zero draft.” It’s impossible to not have any ideas. In this workshop you’ll be given quick writing exercises and prompts to unlock your creativity. Then, through discussions and sharing, we will open up the early writing process and discover that ideas are indeed everywhere. That leads to the reality that no first draft is ever very good. But that’s exactly how it should be! We will explore the concept and the obstacles of judgement, and how you can embrace the idea of development from the very beginning. Multiple drafts doesn’t make a bad writer. It makes you a smart one.

Based on material from instructor Mike Czuba’s book, No Shortcuts – The Five Chambers, you’ll be given a set of practical guides to help you discover and refine your own creative process. The five chambers were developed and designed from over a decade of teaching thousands of students at the university level and multiple decades of making art while helping other artists make theirs.

This event is sponsored by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers. CSIF was founded in 1978 by a collective of twelve filmmakers who saw the growing need for film resources and film equipment on the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), also known as Calgary, Alberta. Now over 40 years later we are an integral part of the growing cultural community in Calgary and are excited about new collaborations and opportunities.
