Vertigo Theatre has entertained audiences for over 41 years with high-quality programming. We are located at the base of the Calgary Tower, which is home to our administration and ticket offices as well as our two performance venues. We program the BD&P Mystery Theatre Series and are also home to a variety of arts organizations that rent our performance venues throughout the regular theatre season.

Vertigo’s current operating budget is approximately $3.2 million. The company employs a staff of 12 full-time employees and over 200 artists, creators and technicians annually, and is supported by a dedicated volunteer core of over 300 people.
Our diverse audience includes young adults to urban professionals and seniors.

Vertigo’s artistic success, while maintaining fiscal balance, is achieved through a mix of earned revenue, government funding, and an individual and corporate sponsorship program. With its strong history and track record of innovation, Vertigo is looking to build upon this success going forward.

The Ideal Candidate

Vertigo Theatre is looking for a charismatic storyteller who inspires and influences internal and external stakeholders easily, is results-driven, and naturally creates a high-performance culture. Our ideal candidate is a highly engaging, personable, thoughtful, and authentic leader with impeccable attention to detail. They will have an extensive network of contacts and are keenly aware of who the philanthropic and corporate leaders are within the city, have excellent research skills, intuition, and a superior ability to “close the deal.”

Strategic Planning:

  • Work with the Executive Director, Artistic Director, Marketing Team, and Board leadership to set short and long-term goals.
  • Take the lead role in developing the strategic Fund Development plan that will achieve financial goals, and once approved by management, communication strategies and tactics to staff and board, ensuring all are knowledgeable as to their responsibilities.

Fund Development:

  • Lead all prospect, donor and sponsorship research, identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, in accordance with the Fund Development Plan.
  • Lead researcher and writer of Vertigo Theatre’s Case for Support and other solicitation and recognition materials
  • Conduct and lead face to face solicitations.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of direct response programs and materials.
  • Assist the Executive Director with the identification, application and reporting in relation to government and private foundation funding.
  • Actively seek out community opportunities, presentations and attendance at events, to enhance the Society’s image and visibility with current and prospective donors and sponsors.
  • Oversee appropriate records and reporting in relation to all donations, sponsorship and gaming revenues in accordance with CRA best practice and the Society’s policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Capital Campaign planning, implementation and reporting, in partnership with the Development Committee, Executive Director and Capital Campaign Cabinet to develop and implement a multi-year capital campaign strategy.

Team Leadership:

  • Select and provide strong leadership and mentorship to all fund development team members and contractors, including conducting formal performance reviews with direct reports and compensation recommendations to the Executive Director.

Volunteer Recruitment and Support:

  • As an active member of the Nominating and Development Committees, work with the Board to identify and recruit passionate volunteer leadership to serve on the Fund Development Committee and Special Events Teams.
  • Oversee, organize and support all Development volunteer participation.
  • Ensure appropriate support, preparation and training, including orientation programs for new volunteers and board members.

Candidate Qualifications


  • Degree, diploma, or certificate from an accredited post-secondary institution or equivalent experience preferred. CFRE Designation would be considered an asset.


  • Five to 10 years of fundraising or business development experience in a service industry or with a not-for-profit;
    Demonstrated success closing major gifts or sales ranging from $25,000 to $100,000+; and proven management and leadership capabilities.

Hours: Full-time 40-hour work-week Monday to Friday, with some evenings and weekends required
Start Date:  January 7, 2019 (negotiable)
Compensation: $80,0000 – $110,000 based on experience
Benefit Plan: 50-50 expense co-share between employer/employee
Probation: Three-month period
Vacation: Three-weeks of vacation after one year
