Open Call for Community Block Collaborative Print
Freshly Pressed: Steamroller 2023
A/P is seeking up to 40 local artists who are interested in each contributing one 6” x 6” linocut carving that will be combined into one large 48” x 30” collaborative print that will be steamroller-printed during Freshly Pressed: Steamroller 2023, as part of Alberta Culture Days.
This event is in partnership with RICK RACK Textiles and generously funded through Alberta Culture Days.

Summary of the Call:
- No prior printmaking experience is required.
- A/P Members and Non A/P Members are welcome to participate.
- All materials, tools and optional linocut instruction sessions will be provided.
- Participants will carve their own original design.
- Registration is FREE and participation is on a voluntary basis. (A/P members may apply up to 4 hours of carving time toward A/P’s volunteer incentives)
Important Dates:
- Deadline for registration through submitting this form is August 4, 2023.
- A/P will confirm with artists about their participation by August 5, 2023.
- Materials can be picked up as early as August 9, 2023.
- One of four optional free linocut instruction and carving sessions may be attended by participants on either August 9, 12, 16 or 19 (advance registration is required).
- Completed linocuts must be delivered to A/P by August 26, 2023.

About Freshly Pressed: Steamroller 2023
This year, A/P will be an official Alberta Culture Days Host Site, providing two events that include free public programming for all ages during the month of September. One of these events is Freshly Pressed: Steamroller 2023, presented in partnership with RICK RACK Textiles.
Event Details
Date: Saturday, September 16, 2023
Time: 10am – 4pm
Location: RICK RACK Textiles (4704, Manhattan Rd SE)
During this free event, the public of all ages will be invited to celebrate and experience the connection between printmaking and textile art on a large scale! There will be a hands-on fabric printing activity, a window gallery to view local artwork of all kinds, and a spectacular outdoor steamroller printing demonstration!
One of the giant relief blocks to be steamroller printed will be a collaborative ‘Community Block’ that combines original linocuts by up to 40 different artist community members that are designed based on themes connecting printmaking to the textile arts.
FRESHLY PRESSED aims to:
- Foster new community connections through an inclusive group project and event.
- Provide education and experience for both budding and experienced printmakers.
- Highlight printmaking as an accessible art form that the public can directly engage with.
- Promoting the importance of art and culture as part of a vibrant community.
Who Can Participate?
- This opportunity is free (no application or participation fees!) and open to A/P members and non-members alike who reside within Calgary and the surrounding area.
- Artists of all artistic disciplines and experience levels are encouraged to participate, including those who have not had the opportunity to try linocut before.
- Participants must be 18+ years of age.
- Registrations are limited to one registration per person.
All materials (linoleum and carving tools) will be provided to participating artists, and opportunities to attend one of four free instruction/carving sessions will be available through the A/P Studio throughout the month of August.
