We are a non-profit presenting arts organization seeking an experienced front of house manager to join our team of strategists, creative thinkers, artists and collaborators. Our team consists of players who love what they do and love to help others realize their goals. By striving to create an environment that allows each team member to be at their best, we believe we can create a team that can accomplish any big goal and have fun doing it!

Who we are?

The GRAND is Western Canada’s oldest theatre and has contributed to Calgary’s theatre and live performance communities in a myriad of ways for over 100 years. Today we are a non-profit organization committed to being the home of creative placemaking in Calgary. Our mission is to be a culture house presenting high quality and thought provoking art, creating diverse and inclusive experiences, and bringing together artists and audiences to invoke a new way of thinking, appreciating and being, which transforms the community. The GRAND is in the midst of re-building the organization, and requires individuals who are confident and comfortable taking initiative, adapting to change, and solving problems.

We are dedicated to presenting art from all disciplines and a variety of perspectives, supporting local artists in presenting and mastering their craft, and creating memorable experiences for our audiences.

Your expertise:

  • Team leadership: Strong and personable leader who is effective at leading and communicating with a wide range of casual staff members that range in age, gender, and demography.
  • Initiative: Quick, on-the-feet thinker in regard to day-of-event needs and requirements.
  • Effective interactive communication: Strong communicator, being able to effectively work with The GRAND staff, The GRAND patrons, and clients.
  • Developing others: Ability to evaluate and leverage strengths in others to create a strong, resilient, and stable casual workforce and, reciprocally, able to identify weaknesses and challenges and to work with casual staff in addressing areas of growth.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity: Cross-cultural sensitivity and unbiased execution of events and interaction with diverse patrons and clients.
  • Client service orientation: Excellent customer service skills to model expected approach for front-facing staff of The GRAND.
  • Cooperation and collaboration: Proactive in identifying new solutions and practices in event/performance execution with a diverse team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead a team of ushers, bartenders, and/or ticketing staff in the successful execution of an event from a three-tiered perspective: organization, client, and patron; and, ensure that the event runs successfully as per show notes/event details.
  • Be available to front of house manage a number of events throughout the season and ensure the safety of all front of house staff and patrons within the venue, including taking lead or delegating the management of emergency situations.
  • Maintain a positive and communicative relationship between back of house, front of house, and administration.
  • Schedule front of house staff for events, and ensure an effective team is assembled to execute the event or performance.
  • Maintain bar inventory, including ordering when necessary, rotating stock, and ensuring the secure storage and tracking of inventory.
  • Ensure front of house infrastructure and policies are clear and up-to-date. Complete necessary documentation as required: update manuals, policies and procedures, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Train front of house staff and manage a database of front of house staff.
  • Evaluate front of house staff and maintain the integrity of the front of house operations.
  • Attend to and log patron complaints and resolution of such complaints.

Your educational background:

  • Seeking two to three years progressive in front of house.
  • Post secondary education is an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Intermediate level computer skills in Google Suite, MS Office.
  • Knowledge of website building (eg. SquareSpace), HTML, and CSS are considered an asset.

Position Type

Reporting into the special projects manager, this is a part time position working 24 hours per week. Any additional hours will be compensated according to our time in lieu policy.

Salary: Range $22 to $26 per hour, dependent on experience and qualifications.

Where you’ll be working

The GRAND is situated on the land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is Mohkinstsis, which is also referred to as the City of Calgary. We honour and acknowledge Mohkinstsis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Iyarhe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations who also call this place home. We also acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

This position is in The GRAND building located at 608, 1 St. SW, in Calgary. Some remote work may be possible.
