Wage: $18/hour

Commercial gallery full-time summer student — half gallery assistant/ half artist estate research intern.

Newzones is hiring a post-secondary student for a work-integrated learning placement. This position will formally integrate a student’s academic studies with quality experiences within a commercial gallery setting. The student must be currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

We are looking for a candidate who loves the visual arts, is organized, efficient and detail-oriented. The position involves, but is not limited to for gallery assistant portion: installing and striking exhibitions, crating and shipping artwork, gallery maintenance, artwork documentation, and website content For Estate Research Intern able to work closely with all individuals involved in estate. Assist in completing total inventory for estate at multiple locations with beneficiaries and art appraiser. Assist in tracking inventory. The candidate needs extremely strong writing and research skills.

Successful candidates will:

  • Have a driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Have excellent written communication skills and ability to create professional content.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be capable of juggling a variety of projects.
  • Have excellent knowledge of the Adobe Suite.
  • Have knowledge of photography.
  • Demonstrate integrity: focused on high quality outcomes.
  • Demonstrate discretion, tact, initiative and sound judgment skills.
  • Demonstrate formal artwork installation knowledge.
  • Be confident with use of power tools.

Duties include but not limited to an introduction of:

  • Handling and unpacking of artwork while ensuring the safety and security of artwork at all times.
  • Assist gallery director with all aspects of day to day gallery practices, including administrative tasks.
  • Press distribution, social media updates, website maintenance.
  • Gaining comprehensive knowledge of gallery artists to interact with visitors.
  • Installation and deinstallation of artwork / handling of artwork.
  • Inventory control.
  • Daily maintenance of gallery: cleaning of surfaces, floors etc.
  • Crating and packaging of artwork.

This position is an entry level commercial gallery position which combines 70% administrative and 30% technical (physical) aspects of gallery life.
