General Manager

This is a full-time role and is an excellent fit for someone who possesses a passion for preservation and appreciation of authentic Indigenous arts. The role requires the successful candidate to understand the complex nature of Indigenous artwork and have a high level of knowledge associated with the contemporary, historical, Indigenous perspective.

The general We are an Indigenous-centred and owned gallery and gift shop that is recruiting the position of manager, who will report to the business owner and manage a team that is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the studio and gallery. It is also expected that the general manager empowers each artist by cultivating skills development in production technique, show preparation, installation process; while contributing to cultural preservation. We are looking for a general manager who will display a positive attitude and a sincere joy for the work that they do.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a professional, positive and motivated sales team.
  • Oversee and facilitate in-gallery sales.
  • Ensure high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Create educational and awareness opportunities through open interactions.
  • Assess customers’ needs and identify opportunities for growing awareness.
  • Create new strategies for growth and put them into practice.
  • Assist in the selection of the gallery portfolio.
  • Communicate with artists on needs, needs of the gallery and its artists.
  • Organize promotional in-gallery functions and special events.
  • Website maintenance and social media postings.
  • Liaise with clients and the community.
  • Responsible for all areas of operations and service including, inventory management, budget management, delivery, maintenance and administration (e.g., insurance, etc.).
  • Supervising and training new staff.
  • Hiring and terminating employees.
  • Evaluating employee productivity and performance and implementing strategies for improvement.
  • Keeping reports of business and employee performance.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are followed.

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a management role that involved managing employees or contractors.
  • Post-secondary education in Business Administration or a similar certificate or degree is a strong asset.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and worldview is a requirement.

Preference will be given to candidates that identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, Inuit).
