Gilgamesh

Ambrose Arts Theatre will be launching their season with Gilgamesh directed by Jacqueline Russell.

Gilgamesh is based on the ancient Sumerian and Akkadian epic poem. This 4,000-year-old myth tells the story of Gilgamesh, the king of the city of Uruk, and his quest for immortality.

Jacqueline is an educator, director, performer, creator and clown based in Mohkínstsis/Calgary on Treaty 7 territory. She specializes in clown, mask, immersive theatre creation and theatre for young audiences. Jacqueline was the artistic producer of Handsome Alice (formerly Urban Curvz) Theatre from 2011-2015, the 2013-14 RBC Emerging Director at Lunchbox Theatre and the Artistic Producer for Evergreen Theatre from 2008-2013. She has directed for Evergreen Theatre, Calgary Opera, The Shakespeare Company, New West Theatre, Lunchbox Theatre, Urban Curvz, Keyano College, Calgary Young People’s Theatre, the University of Calgary and Inside Out Theatre.

Rehearsals for volunteer performers will begin Monday, September 12, 2022 and will run Mondays-Thursdays, 6:30 – 9:30pm with the addition of a couple of Saturday rehearsals (TBD). Not all performers will be called for all rehearsals. There is some flexibility in the rehearsal schedule to accommodate actor availability. Please indicate any potential conflicts in your submission.

This is a voluntary position.

Rehearsals will happen at Ambrose University.

Dates

Production week: is November 28 – December 3, 2022. Performers must be available in the afternoons and evenings during this week.
Production run: December 1 – 3, 2022, at Big Secret Theatre, Arts Commons.
Auditions: September 10, 2022, from 1:00 – 4:00pm.
Group movement auditions: from 1:00 – 2:00pm and individual auditions between 2:00 – 4:00pm (10-minute slots)

We are seeking non-equity performers who will play multiple characters, members of the chorus, and puppeteers. We are seeking bold, zealous performers for this highly physical piece.

Ages 18+, all body types and abilities are welcome. This is a voluntary position.

If you are unavailable on this date, we may be able to accommodate a different audition time.

  • Please submit a headshot, resume and cover letter.
  • In your submission, please indicate if you have any experience with puppetry, dance, mask, or clown, and if you sing or play any musical instruments.
  • Please prepare a 2–3-minute performance of an EPIC story. This could be from a published text or something you write/adapt yourself.
