Relief printing, or block printing, refers to the oldest and most simplistic of artistic reproduction methods, where an image is carved into a block, inked up, and stamped onto paper—a process that can be repeated over and over again.

In this demonstration, Matt Dunlop will take you through the basics of how to carve a relief print and guide you through a number of techniques that will leave you with the confidence to tackle your own projects.

It is important to develop good techniques and working practices when using these tools to avoid injury and to allow the process to be creative and fun. Matt will take you through his home set up and introduce you to each chisel and gauge necessary for completing skilled work, and how to select the appropriate one for the task at hand. He will also demonstrate the differences between lino and woodcut, arm you with a number of cutting methods for different aspects of your design, and help you pick out your own set of tools.

This is a great demo for anyone who hasn’t picked up their chisels in a while as well as anyone totally new to the art form. Over the 2 hours, there will be plenty of time for questions, and you’re encouraged to have your own tools handy if you have some.
