Mentorship opportunity for Indigenous writers who want to write for an animated children’s series with Turquoise Sky Entertainment – to be followed by contract in scriptwriting.

Turquoise Sky Entertainment is seeking Indigenous writers (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) with experience in scriptwriting to be mentored in writing for animated children’s series through a paid mentorship followed by contract position in an Indigenous writer’s room for an animated series that is to be distributed in both English and Cree/Michif languages!Deadline to Apply: Applications will be accepted until July 24, 2023 or until suitable candidate(s) found.Location: Remote, must have internet connection and access to their own scriptwriting software and computer.

Position Details

Mentorship position of a series of online meetings (timelines TBA), followed by a paid contract position to produce a script or two.

Rate: To be determined based on experience. This is a paid-contracted position.

About the Project

Created by Judy Iseke, SHIFT AND GO! is a fun-filled whimsical animation series. From one adventure to the next, every episode is a quest to find out through experiences and adventures. Each episode begins with Nipiy and Yôtin asking a question about their world and shapeshifting into a form to try to figure out the answer. It’s never as simple as it looks so grandparents guide the kids to help them figure out how to find answers.

Mentees will be provided basic skills in writing for children and animation (goals, obstacles, 3-act structure, emotional connection/goals, character/archetypes, anthropomorphism, comedic situations, dialogue, etc.). Through additional writing assignments and experiences mentees will gain proficiency in these skills in preparation for creating an episode script or two.

Ideal Skills:

  • Familiarity with basic writing principles
  • Writing ability for television
  • Comedy writing for television
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • Organizational and time-management skills
  • Available for training sessions, critique and feedback in web conference during daytime or evening hours
  • 18+ years of age
  • Additional skills considered an asset but not required
  • Writing for children for television experience
  • Writing for animation experience
  • Knowledge of scriptwriting software such as Final Draft, etc.

Turquoise Sky Entertainment accepts applications from all qualified Indigenous parties who self-identify as members of First Nations, Inuit, or Métis nations and who can provide confirmation documentation upon request (as per funder guidelines). We are particularly focused on Alberta residents (filed taxes in Alberta in 2021, 2022 or 2023) but others will be considered.
