Movement Performers Wanted

Seeking movement performers for a collectively devised performance experience

Inside Out Theatre and All Bodies Dance Project are seeking performers for Translations, led by Naomi Brand & Collin van Uchelen, presented as part of the High Performance Rodeo

Translations is an immersive performance for small audiences designed to be experienced with the “non-visual senses.” Accessible to both blind and sighted audiences, Translations invites everyone to hear, feel, smell and imagine live dance.

Who we’re looking for:

Calgary-based performers of all styles are welcome to apply. Translations is a collectively devised movement, sound and touch-based performance experience with two different roles available:

  • Performers — Fully involved in the research and creation process [3 weeks: December 12 – 16, 2023, January 8 – 19, 2024]
  • Guides — paired with performers (one to one) for the second portion of the collaboration [2 weeks: January 8 – 19, 2024]

This collaborative piece contains text, speaking, memorization and choreographed movement; prior experience performing and speaking in public is helpful. During the workshop portion, we’ll be collectively devising a script and the choreography.

Most importantly, we are looking to build a team of artists who are curious about the process and research of live audio description, particularly for Blind and partially sighted audiences, and those interested in collectively devising new ways to incorporate live-description within artistic performance; opposed to accessibility as an afterthought. Inside Out and All Bodies Dance Project are also committed to this ensemble reflecting Calgary’s cultural and gender diversity.

Schedule:

Rehearsals and performance will take place at Inside Out Theatre at Eau Claire Market.

Rehearsals will be Monday – Friday, 10am – 3pm. A healthy and sustainable schedule is a priority.

Rehearsal Weeks:

Guides: January 8 – 12, 2023, January 15 – 19, 2023

Performances:

Preview during the week of January 15, 2024. Public performances January 19 – 21, 2024

Fees:

$1,000/week CAD artist fees. Each artist submission will receive a $25 audition fee. Canadian Actor’s Equity Association members will be contracted under the D.O.T. policy.

Accessibility:

Inside Out and All Bodies Dance Project are committed to removing any accessibility barriers. Prior to rehearsals beginning all artists will take part in an inclusive design process to allow us to collectively identify and address any access needs.

*We acknowledge that given the nature of Translations exploring non-visual senses, these roles are not accessible to d/Deaf performers. This performance will also take place in a low light environment.

Covid-19 considerations:

All rehearsals and performances are dependent on local Covid-19 restrictions. Artists applying understand that masks and testing are encouraged and may be required. Inside Out and All Bodies Dance Project will supply all required PPE and ensure all Covid 19 safety protocols.

Regarding performances, audience size is dependent on the number of performers, as each audience member will be paired up with a performer & guide.

Once signed, all artist contracts will be honoured in full.

In a written* or video recorded submission:

  • Tell us a bit about yourself and why you are interested in this project, along with what role you are interested in (performer or guide).
