M:ST & Luma Quarterly Critical Writing Prize

Open Call for Emerging Writers

The deadline for this opportunity has passed.

Deadline: October 28, 2018 at midnight

Luma Film & Media Art Quarterly and M:ST Performative Art Biennial is excited to present an inaugural Critical Writing Prize coinciding with the M:ST 9 Biennial, September 7 to October 7, 2018. Emerging writers, including students and recent graduates, are invited to submit to this prize.

The accepted contributor will receive a $300 cash prize as well as a feature in the winter issue (February 2019) of the Luma Quarterly online publication, which includes a publishing honorarium of an additional $200.

The intent of this writing prize is to provide an opportunity for an emerging writer to respond to contemporary performance art in Western Canada, specifically as it incorporates or relates to film and media art.

Interested writers must attend at least one scheduled performance, exhibition, or workshop during M:ST 9, responding directly or using it as a foundation for their submission, which may take the form of a written review, essay, reflection, or creative response. It must include a film and/or media art aspect to be published in Luma Quarterly.

Project descriptions, festival schedule, and other information about M:ST 9 Performative Art Biennial can be found by visiting mstfestival.org.

There is no fee to apply for this prize. All M:ST 9 events are free and all are welcome.

For any questions regarding submissions, please email us at submissions@mstfestival.org

Luma Quarterly

Luma is a quarterly online publication about independent film and media art published by CSIF – The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers and EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society. Luma includes critical essays, news, reviews, event previews, interviews, reflections, and photo/video essays about culturally relevant productions, events and ideas. Luma aims to expand the critical dialogue about media art and film from a Western Canadian perspective on an international platform.

M:ST 9 Performative Art Biennial

M:ST 9 takes over theatres, galleries, and public spaces all over the downtown core from September 7 to October 7, 2018, bringing you opportunities to entangle with media in new and surprising ways through exhibitions, interactive installations, performances, and interventions.

Full festival schedule can be found at mstfestival.org.

M:ST acknowledges that we stand on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot and the people of the Treaty 7 region, which includes the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuu T’ina and the Stoney Nakoda First Nations. The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. Amidst the ongoing social, cultural and environmental effects of colonialism, we are committed to dialogue and collaboration with Indigenous artists and communities as part of our mandate to foster performative art practices in Southern Alberta.
