Position Overview

As a board member for Calgary Young People’s Theatre, you will contribute your expertise, passion, and commitment to the organization’s mission and strategic direction. This volunteer position offers the opportunity to play a crucial role in shaping CYPT’s future, ensuring its sustainability, and supporting the community impact it has on young individuals.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning:

  • Participate actively in the development and review of CYPT’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
  • Contribute valuable insights to shape the long-term vision and goals of the organization.

Oversight & Governance:

  • Attend and actively participate in board meetings, committee meetings, and annual general meetings.
  • Uphold and promote ethical governance practices, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Oversee and collaborate with organizational leadership to execute strategic priorities.

Fundraising & Development:

  • Collaborate with fellow board members to identify and secure funding opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, and individual donations.
  • Support fundraising events and initiatives to enhance CYPT’s financial sustainability.

Advocacy and Community Engagement:

  • Serve as an ambassador for CYPT, promoting its mission and activities within the community.
  • Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with organizations, schools, and businesses to enhance CYPT’s reach and impact.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, including government officials, donors, and community leaders, to advocate for the importance of youth arts education.

Risk Management:

  • Work closely with the board to identify and address potential risks to CYPT’s operations and reputation.
  • Provide guidance on strategies to mitigate risks and ensure organizational resilience.

Program Evaluation:

  • Contribute to the ongoing evaluation of CYPT’s programs and initiatives, providing insights and feedback to enhance their effectiveness.
  • Work with the board to assess the impact of programs on the target audience.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):

  • Actively support and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within CYPT’s operations and programs.
  • Advocate for the incorporation of DEI principles in decision-making processes and organizational policies.

Succession Planning:

  • Participate in discussions related to leadership succession planning, helping to identify and develop future leaders within the organization.
  • Contribute to the orientation and onboarding of new board members.

Financial Oversight:

  • Review and provide input on financial reports, budgets and financial policies.
  • Collaborate with the finance committee to ensure prudent financial management and transparency.

Community Outreach Events:

  • Attend and actively participate in CYPT events and performances, demonstrating support for the organization’s activities.
  • Engage with the community during events to strengthen CYPT’s relationships.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to CYPT’s mission and values.
  • Previous board or committee experience, preferably in the non-profit sector, is an asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to actively engage in fundraising efforts and/or other organizational activities.
  • Knowledge of or experience in the arts, education, or youth development is an asset; and
  • Qualifications in one or more of the following:
    • Fundraising Experience:
      • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and event planning.
      • Ability to leverage personal and professional networks to secure financial support.
    • Legal or Governance Expertise:
      • Familiarity with non-profit governance, legal compliance, and risk management.
      • Previous experience serving on non-profit boards or committees.
    • Marketing and Public Relations Skills:
      • Proficiency in marketing and public relations to help enhance CYPT’s visibility.
      • Knowledge of social media and digital marketing strategies.
    • Calgary Arts Community Knowledge:
      • Knowledge and/or experience relating to organizations within the Calgary arts community.
    • Arts and Education Advocacy:
      • Passion for the arts and youth education, with a deep understanding of the positive impact of the performing arts on young individuals.
      • Previous involvement in advocacy efforts related to arts education is a plus.
