Totus Tuus Theatre is seeking performers for three workshop readings of Blackbird Calling with the potential of working on the full-scale production in the fall.
Synopsis
Blackbird Calling is the story of a young woman who moves to the prairie pothole region of Alberta and encounters the tameis—undesirables living in double houses on a dead-end street. When she befriends a family of tameis, she discovers their stories and culture in a way that seeps into her identity. First published in Quattro Books and shortlisted for the ReLit Award.
Character Descriptions
- Abba: spiritual elder, gruff prison guard, poet—a tamei.
- Gloria: Ni’is’ niece, a fighter, a painter; self-assured—a tamei.
- Little Hummer: guileless, but a fighter with spunk; befriends the tameis and is named by them.
- Brother: writer, philosopher, looks like a tamei.
- Father: strict and linear but sensitive.
- Mother: eccentric, musician, plagued by inner turmoil.
- Bonnie: friend to Abba, wise elder, spirited.
Smaller roles (in one scene each): bully, magician, store clerk, paramedic/police.
The workshopping in May 2025 is unpaid. The fall production is profit sharing.
