Opportunity

Through the application of professional expertise in traditional and digital photographic media, materials and processes, the photography facilitator supports the aims and objectives of Banff Centre residencies.

The photography facilitator’s responsibilities include working as a member of a project team by acting as a project manager, advisor or production person as determined from project to project. For the fulfillment of project responsibilities, the photography facilitator works in collaboration with residency faculty, program managers, program directors and other project leaders. The photography facilitator works with the production manager, artist support to coordinate facility maintenance, planning and schedules.

This position works in conjunction with other production staff in implementing the overall program directions determined by the arts programming team. From time to time the photography facilitator may work with production teams from the other departments of Banff Centre.

Specific Accountabilities

Reporting to the production manager, artist support, below are some key responsibilities:

  • Support independent and collaborative research and/or production activities of artists in creative residencies; the production of new works; and the delivery of training.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and supervision of photography production facilities and related equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Monitor the proper use of equipment and adherence to the established code of practice for the photography production facilities.
  • Initiate troubleshooting and communicate job-related and program-related problems to the production manager, artist support.
  • Work with the production manager, artist support in the organization of community classes and training related facility use.
  • Monitor and reconcile project budgets and identify potential budget variances or problems to project leaders.
  • As required, work directly with production manager, artist support and the managing director, production in the development of project budgets and preparing financial reports.
  • Maintain reasonable contact with Banff Centre artists, faculty and staff, stay informed through attendance of performances, gallery openings, readings, lectures, rehearsals, as time permits.
  • Keep up to date on current developments and directions nationally and internationally in media and visual arts and take initiatives in proposing and/or implementing changes in procedures; keep up to date on the cultural, economic, political and technological developments affecting the needs of artists and cultural workers at different points in their careers; monitor the need for and assists in the development of programs that reflect changing community needs.
  • Assist in developing and delivering democratic, innovative, cross-disciplinary, and cross-cultural programming.

Qualifications & Educational Requirements

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a recognized visual arts program.
  • Experience in the field at a high level, both as a practitioner and educator.
  • Demonstrate competence in all technical areas and equipment use in the specific production facility.
  • Fluent in a broad range of contemporary visuals arts theory and practice.
  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe programs.
  • Prioritization of work and judgment are necessary as deadlines will vary for the various components of the position and may at times conflict with one another.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal negotiation skills, the ability to problem-solve, the ability to initiate and handle unsupervised work.
  • Committed to the role of helping other visual artists realize their own artistic projects.

Special Requirements

  • From time-to-time, the facilitator’s responsibilities will require working irregular hours and weekends.

Employment Terms & Benefits

  • This is a temporary position ending on October 31, 2022.
  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probation period.
  • This position pays between $24.75 and $28.86 per hour, depending on experience, working 37.5 hours per week.
