Project InTandem

Understudy/Apprentice Role

Project InTandem has commissioned choreographers Elke Schroeder (Toronto) and Karissa Barry (Vancouver/Edmonton) to each begin research and creation processes for two new dance works. We are looking for an emerging artist to join the team as an understudy/apprentice.

Project Details

The project will encompass approximately 60 to 70 rehearsal hours from May 3 to 21, 2021 with Elke (Tuesday to Saturday rehearsals between 9:30am and 3:00pm) and May 31 to June 4, 2021 with Karissa (Monday to Friday rehearsals roughly 9:30am and 3:30pm). The applicant may not be required for all rehearsals. Due to COVID-19 and ongoing restrictions, certain aspects of the project may vary or be adapted to virtual means.

We are looking for an emerging artist within the first five years of their career. The applicant will act as an understudy for both works. These will be rigorous dance works with a high level of physicality. The artist will have the opportunity to work closely with both commissioned choreographers. Responsibilities will include: partaking in choreographic movement tasks to generate movement material, learning the roles of the cast, assisting the choreographer with any tasks during rehearsal, etc.

The applicant will receive subsidized YYC Contemporary Technique Classes during these weeks—roughly nine classes with the commissioned choreographers (COVID-19 pending), $500 honorarium, and mentorship from the senior artists of the project. The applicant will be required to submit an experience summary at the end of the engagement.

Video submission may be requested.

Project InTandem is created by dance artists Meghann Michalsky and Sylvie Moquin, who have produced Project InTandem in 2017 and 2020.
