About this Position

The senior programs manager will lead an innovative team in the planning, delivery, management and evaluation of programs for the National Music Centre. NMC programs include public programs, live music, education, school, youth, and after-school programs, artist residencies, professional development programs, interactive demonstrations, special events, panel discussions and other programs that drive attendance and use of National Music Centre’s building, Studio Bell, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

National Music Centre tells stories through its collections and exhibitions, and our programming is aligned and developed to amplify the stories within our exhibitions whenever possible.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Under established guidelines, develop, implement and manage programs designed to connect and engage visitors of all ages to visit and experience NMC.
  • Work with internal teams to deliver education, public programs, special events, artist development and live music programs that serve the mandate, mission and organizational goals and priorities of NMC.
  • When required, co-develop digital program offerings designed to connect learners remotely.
  • Oversee budget, design, delivery and evaluation of programs.
  • Lead and manage a team of salaried and part-time programming staff.
  • Keep abreast of contemporary standards and practices for education programs in Canada and beyond.
  • Work with education programs manager to support the needs of school-aged children, teachers and internal staff.
  • Build and foster relationships with official partners, potential collaborators, including local, regional and national educational communities, academic institutions, music educators, music organizations, associations, museums and other arts organizations locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Support special projects such as events and efforts arising from other program streams or organizational activities.
  • Work with strategic hall of fame partners to execute existing agreements and to seek opportunities to increase the extent or quality of these partnerships.
  • Liaise directly with program partners and sponsors.
  • Work closely with the marketing team to ensure digital and physical promotional collateral is produced on schedule and within budget.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess many of the following skills and attributes:

  • A collaborative, positive attitude and solution-based approach to problem solving.
  • A minimum of five years’ full-time experience developing, managing, delivering, promoting and evaluating music and education-based programming on a municipal, regional, national and/or international basis.
  • Experience coordinating and managing employees, including recruiting, mentoring and training.
  • A broad network in a wide variety of music disciplines (ie. pop, rock, classical, hip-hop, country, blues, jazz, electronic, world, folk et al) with regional, national and international connections in music and music education.
  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in education, programming, radio, music industry, museums, music programming or appropriate discipline.
  • Familiarity with trends in education and public programming at museums and cultural institutions, including live interpretation and discovery spaces for younger audiences, with a focus on digital learning and outreach.
  • Possession of superior writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Possession of excellent organizational, leadership, conflict management and training skills.
  • Adaptable, flexible and effective in an active team environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities and groups of people who need to  cooperate to achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Proficiency in both MAC-based and PC-based computer platforms.
  • Project management experience an asset.
  • Experience with live music production, events and concert management.
  • Experience in developing projects in diverse cultural contexts.
