Sing with Melissa Dorsey

Anyone can sing, and the Rogues Choir will prove it! In this class students will learn basic music theory/sheet music reading skills, the physical make-up of the vocal system, basic piano skills, warm-up techniques/exercises, basic musical vocabulary, tips and tricks to apply to make songs sound musical, how to incorporate acting into a vocal performance and how to blend as a group through choral arrangements of multiple genres.
The goal of this course is to help students gain confidence in their individual singing ability as well as understand and better operate within a musical environment. This is suitable for students with beginner to intermediate singing abilities. Opportunities for solos may be available.
Schedule: Sundays 11:00am – 1:00pm
Duration: 10 weeks
Dates: September 15 – December 1, 2019 (no class October 13 & November 10, 2019)

Melissa attended Rocky Mountain College to study music with vocal coaches Christy Derksen & Kirsten Schorr, bassist John Gray, trombone professionals James Scott and Wade Dorsey, and conducting mentor Henric Idestrom. She also is a graduate of the Master Class program with Company of Rogues and most recently took vocal pedagogy at Berklee University in Boston, MA.

She has toured with choir and orchestras across Canada, US, and Europe, recorded on three albums, toured with the accapella group HOJA, composed music for seven original musicals at Heritage Park, as well as played in the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Melissa is teaching music around Calgary, recording cartoon voices (most recently Gao in BuddyFight X and Kamui in Cardfight!! Vanguard), studies with Tamara Beatty, writing shows with her husband Trevor Matheson and touring schools and churches all across Canada with a company she co-founded called HeARTbeat Theatre Productions. Melissa is also a private music teacher, composer, director, tech designer, and producer around Calgary.
