Special Projects Intern
Avenue magazine is seeking a special projects intern for a six-month term from May 2 to November 30, 2022.
This full-time contract position is an opportunity to work with an award-winning publication, gain invaluable experience in the magazine industry, expand your network of contacts and develop your skills through on-the-job training.
RedPoint Media Group Inc., Avenue’s parent company, is an award-winning publishing house and content-driven marketing studio in Calgary. You’ll be joining the team that creates our in-house brand Avenue, an award-winning city lifestyle magazine. Our company also creates custom publications for clients including the Calgary Foundation, the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Stollery Hospital Foundation.

RedPoint Media has a hybrid office setup offering employees the opportunity to work from home or from the co-working space at cSPACE King Edward. Some face-to-face meetings as well as event attendance will be necessary.

Our Opportunity
This internship is a full-time, six-month contract position. The salary is based on a 40-hour work week at minimum wage, and you will be paid semi-monthly on the 15th and the last day of the month.
This is an opportunity to:
- Work closely with the editor-in-chief, managing editor and assistant editor on the Top 40 Under 40 and Made in Alberta projects, as well as on other feature packages as assigned.
- Coordinate the Made in Alberta nomination and judging packages and events (virtual and/or digital).
- Coordinate the Made in Alberta Readers’ Choice voting process.
- Coordinate the Top 40 Under 40 nomination and judging packages and events (virtual and/or digital).
- Help create assigning packages for writers and maintain story progress files for both projects.
- Help schedule interviews and photo shoots, and maintain and update contact information for current and past honorees of both programs.
- Research and write for the magazine and website, including but not limited to Top 40 profiles and related stories.
- Help upload copy and images to the website.
- Complete fact-checking of various features and departments including but not limited to Made in Alberta stories, Top 40 profiles and accompanying features.
- Coordinate the efforts of the editorial, art and marketing efforts for the Made in Alberta and Top 40 events.
- Update the marketing databases and create a marketing plan for the two programs for the following year.
- Participate in efforts to grow both programs.
- Provide support to the editorial team on the days of the events.
- Write, research and fact-check.
- Create content for digital platforms including social media, newsletters, and the website.
- Take part in Avenue’s editorial process.
- Perform various administrative tasks.
- Participate in brainstorming meetings.
- Take on other duties as assigned.
Our Ideal Candidate
As the special projects intern, you will be responsible for the coordination and management of two of our signature annual programs. As the main point of contact for each program, you will be representing Avenue and RedPoint Media to many external stakeholders on a daily basis. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who not only can follow complex instructions but who can think of ways to improve our processes and find ways to be more efficient. This is a role for someone who is looking for a challenge but also wants to have a lot of fun along the way!
Your skills, knowledge and know-how:
- Ability to write, edit and proofread effectively.
- Great communication skills.
- Very organized, with exceptional time-management skills.
- Fluency in Microsoft Office, social networking sites and the Mac operating system.
- Experience working with WordPress and ClickUp is an asset.
- A current student or recent graduate of post-secondary education in journalism, electronic publishing or a related field.
Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum one year of media experience.
