Writing, Inclusion, and Diversity in Publishing with Jen Sookfong Lee

In the process of finding the right idea and the right premise to write, we have all considered the concept of cultural appropriation. How do we avoid it? What kind of narratives and voices from what communities am I comfortable writing? How will my writing about cultures other than my own be perceived by agents, editors, and readers?
It’s a very real, and a very complicated, anxiety, and one that almost every writer has had to consider. After all, including a diverse cast of characters in prose, and exploring voices in poetry, are what we strive for. But how do we do so in a way that honours what we want to write and also the communities we are referencing?
This workshop takes place in the theatre at cSPACE King Edward (Main Level, 1721 29th Ave. SW).

About Jen Sookfong Lee
Jen Sookfong Lee was born and raised in Vancouver’s East Side, and she now lives with her son in North Burnaby. Her books include The Conjoined, nominated for International Dublin Literary Award and a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, The Better Mother, a finalist for the City of Vancouver Book Award, The End of East, The Shadow List, and Finding Home. Jen acquires and edits for ECW Press and co-hosts the literary podcast, Can’t Lit.
