The confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers has been a historical and cultural gathering place for time immemorial. From its origins as Mohkinsstsis (Blackfoot), Wîchîspa (Nakoda), and Guts’ists’i (Tsuut’ina), to its more recent history, Fort Calgary has a complex story to tell. As caretakers of a unique National Historic Site, Fort Calgary aims to present its history to connect people by deepening their understanding, enhancing their curiosity and informing their context for contemporary life.

Fort Calgary is recruiting for a camp supervisor. This exciting role leads the implementation of the daily operations for Fort Calgary’s summer camp experience. This role oversees the development of a fun and educational environment that encourages youth to build friendships, develop confidence, and participate as active citizens across Fort Calgary camp experiences, which build on a rich foundation of stories, with themes connecting to the arts and science.

What will you do?

  • Supervise and actively lead and manages all aspects of the camps including enrollment, programming, program records, camper information, attendance and incident reports.
  • Support and supervise camp leaders with the successful daily operations of operating a camp in a museum environment, with both indoor and outdoor programming.
  • Deliver programs and facilitate workshops in the event of staff sickness or other interruptions.
  • Plan, lead and modify program lessons and activities.
  • Collaborate with the youth program manager in development of camp programming.
  • Support the organization and maintenance of all registration and payments for campers.
  • Oversee staff scheduling for training and operations.
  • Consistently follow program policies and procedures with campers.
  • Enable accommodations for campers with varying learning needs and assistance.
  • Understand and apply all policies and emergency procedures to maintain safety and wellbeing of campers.
  • Work collaboratively with all camp team members, and Fort Calgary staff to support the set-up and delivery of camp programs.
  • Supervise campers during before-care, after-care, lunch time and field trips.

What do I need to succeed?

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience supervising teams of informal learning educators, and campers.
  • Undergraduate degree in education, early childhood education, museum studies, humanities, or comparable experience in a related field.
  • Level 1 First Aid training an asset.
  • Knowledge of arts, sciences, or social studies programming in informal learning setting.
  • Knowledge, interest, and experience in working with local and Canadian history, settler-colonialism, and Indigenous—non-Indigenous relations.
  • Able to communicate effectively with others, be self-motivated and maintain an expected level of professionalism.
  • Able to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with people and work effectively with all levels of employees is critical.
  • Exhibit strong personal values, integrity, and hands-on work habits.
  • Highly energetic with a strong work ethic; exhibits contagious enthusiasm.

Availability Requirements:

  • This position is on site at Fort Calgary, with availability from Monday to Friday.
  • Camps operate from 9:00 – 4:00 pm with before and after care scheduled from 8:00am and until 5:00pm.
  • Camp Supervisor and youth programs manager will need to alternate their arrival and departure time to support extended operations.
  • Supervisor commences 1 week prior to camp staff, on June 20, 2022.
  • Staff training from June 27 – 30, 2022.
  • Summer camps commence July 4, operating for 7 weeks, concluding on August 19, 2022.

Camp clean-up will take place from August 22 to 24, 2022.
