The Body Series

Often we look to the external world to identify a system that needs changing, however we forget that real transformation begins from within.

About this Event

Kevin Jesuino, Trico Changemakers Studio Artist in Residence, will engage participants in two workshops for The Body Series via Zoom.

The system we often forget to listen to is in fact the system of our body. Sourcing from our body’s knowledge and using the arts as a means of translation, we will explore various approaches to initiating change from a place of authenticity that inevitably ripples outwards to enact social change.

The Voice of the Rainforest Inside my Body

Date: Friday, June 18, 2021, 9:00 – 11:30am

I imagine my pelvis is home to an enormous rainforest teeming with all kinds of diversity. I hear it calling me inwards as this deep ecology speaks through my body and reaches out to build a stronger network of diverse fauna. Like a vine reaching for the sun, it holds hands with the flora growing from your heart. Together, these wild flowers dance, spiraling around each other in support of each other and hardening off so as to become resilient when the prairie storms come.

A source of transformative queer storytelling and creativity can be found within our bodies. These queer bodies we’ve been given produce words and actions; they also carry with us the story of rejection, pain, isolation, pride, love and hope. With time spent listening to what the body needs and is trying to tell us, we can evoke a powerful story, filled with movement, color and words that can help confront the change we want in ourselves and bring out meaningful change in others as we share our personal story with the world.

In this 2.5-hour workshop, imagine what story your body wants to express and using the power of movement, visual art and creative writing, help meet your true voice. All are welcome to attend, but the workshop will place a focus on LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals interested in the power of art to bring about personal and societal transformation.

The Body is the Revolution

Dates: Thursday, June 24, 2021, 12:00 – 3:00pm & Friday, June 25, 2021, 9:00am – 12:00pm

From the personal to the social field, the body is the first system we encounter, and likely, the most important when channeling deep social transformation. Using art-making, creative writing and expressive movement, explore the world of systems change through seeing, feeling and doing in this creative two-part workshop. Combining tools from lineages associated with the Theatre of the Oppressed (Boal), Expressive Movement Arts (Halprin) and Social Presence Theatre (Hayashi) this workshop aims to explore how the arts can be a powerful transformative tool in bringing about meaningful change. In the first session participants will be led through a series of creative & movement-based exercises. The second session will culminate with the sharing of personal and transformative mini-performance rituals to enact deep systems change in our personal and social fields.

Participants will be encouraged to take these tools into the communities and personal challenges they are currently facing.
