The Common Clown Festival

After almost two years of delay the Pumphouse Theatre, the Calgary Clown Society, and Common Ground Festival are joining forces to present a one-time pandemic catch-up, mashup – The Common Clown Festival!
The Common Clown Festival will be held at the Pumphouse Theatres March 9 – 13, 2022, and will feature artists that would have been shown during the two normally separate Calgary Clown Festival and Common Ground Festival.
This festival will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pumphouse Theatres Society.
These shows will be presented as two performances per evening/matinee with an intermission in between. There will also be two nights of cabaret for artists to present short new or developing performances and a family day presentation. Pumphouse Theatres Society is committed to a diverse and representative festival, including a balance in gender, age, and BIPOC representation.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for one-act shows ranging from 45–70 minutes long. Shorter shows may be considered.
A wide variety of acts for all ages that fit within the realm of physical theatre – clown, mask, puppetry, circus, magicians, etc. We want shows that everyone can enjoy, some kid-friendly fun, and some shows for just adults.
Currently, we are accepting submissions from Canadian Artists only. Although we would like to welcome international artists ever-changing covid19 travel regulations may prevent us from welcoming you last minute. The ability to assist with accommodation and travel costs will depend on grant funds and we are unable to guarantee this assistance.
Call for cabaret submissions will be released in January 2022. We will be seeking shorter performances in the 2 – 10 minute range. Keep an eye out for the second call for submissions if you have something in mind!
What we need from you to be considered for the festival:
- A brief synopsis of your show or concept
- Show length
- Bio’s of the artists involved
- Your media package (Photos and video if available)
- And all other questions answered in our form
Artists who wish to submit must complete our online submission form. The link to the form can be found by visiting forms.google.
The deadline to submit is December 31, 2021
All submissions will be reviewed and applicants will be notified by January 14, 2022.
Remuneration will be dependent upon granting but all artists will be paid a minimum fee based on CTA recommended rates for single performances and not subject to box office split.
