Video Editor

The Opportunity
The video editor is responsible for editing video and visual content in support of Banff Centre departmental and program activities. The video editor’s main responsibilities include editing video according to the brief set out by the director/producer. The video editor will also be the key individual responsible for delivering the final product to the required specifications, ready for broadcast programming, graphic effects; operating AVID computer editing systems for audio and video; communicating directly with producers and directors to meet specific goals; and supervising and coordinating activities with other staff members and practicum participants throughout Banff Centre required for the successful delivery to a hard airdate.
Roles and Responsibilities
The video editor reports to the senior technical producer, below are some of the key responsibilities:
- Responsible for video editing and final delivery of audio/video content related to Banff Centre’s capture and dissemination strategic objectives, and arts programming objectives.
- Organizing and assembling multi-cam edit productions; re-ordering and shaping the content to ensure the logical sequencing and smooth running of the final edit when needed.
- Take briefing notes, outline of footage and/or shot list, script or screenplay and build an initial rough cut according to director/producer direction.
- Selecting shots for each scene suitable for the story line; organizing raw footage into a continuous storyline.
- Inputting of uncut rushes and sound, and synchronising and storing them into files on the SAN and archiving these same materials.
- Verifying time codes and key numbers.
- Choosing appropriate visual effects and music; create graphic elements within video based work.
- Ensure consistent visual identity across all videos.
- Along with the director/producer, determining the exact cutting for the next and final stages to take to final approved edit.
- Responsible for delivering the final product to the required specifications including correcting faulty footage, grading/colouring, NLE audio mix, and adding special effects to finish the film or program.
- Complete final output for broadcast including some file mastering and file delivery to appropriate technical specifications.
- Consult with the director, producer and/or client throughout the post-production process.
- Familiarising oneself with the style of specific directors.
- Edit video and audio for promotional projects, documentation, documentary, art video and drama, and other day to day activities.
- Advise on improvements to existing procedures and practices in the post production area.
- Precisely establish, document and maintain methods, information and metadata records concerning all projects.
- Will provide technical and artistic editing skill development mentorship to practicum participants in video post-production.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
- Minimum five years of post-production and/or broadcast experience with a degree/diploma in a related field or equivalent professional experience.
- Expert AVID editing skills.
- Proficient with Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Basic graphic design skill would be an asset.
- Able to work on both Mac and PC platforms: understanding of broadcast file formats and workflow in a tapeless post production environment is a must.
- High proficiency in both editing practice and theory expanding over several editing styles.
- Ability to meet high impact deadlines and quick turnarounds as required.
- Creative and strong sense of story structure.
- The ability to listen to others and to work well as part of a team.
- A high level of self-motivation, commitment and dedication.
- Organization skills and self/time management skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Will have a demo reel that demonstrates the breadth of post-production skills.
Special Requirements
Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.
Employment Terms and Benefits:
- This is a term position until December 23, 2022.
- In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probationary period.
- This position pays $27.06 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a regular schedule.
