The Opportunity

Reporting to Glenbow’s director, visitor experience & programming, this casual role is responsible for welcoming visitors to Glenbow at The Edison (Glenbow’s satellite gallery) and facilitating a great visitor experience. With a keen understanding of customer service and hospitality, you will create opportunities for visitor discovery and delight. The visitor experience & engagement host puts a human face on the museum and embodies Glenbow’s mission: to activate art, objects and ideas so everyone who experiences Glenbow leaves with something to share. In addition, you will take an active role in working with Glenbow’s director, visitor experience & programming; manager, programs; as well as various Glenbow teams to communicate information about exhibitions at Glenbow at The Edison and about Glenbow’s renovation project, Glenbow Reimagined.

Please note: this position is to provide backfill for the visitor experience team and hours are very casual.

Key Responsibilities

Guest Reception at Glenbow at The Edison

  • Welcoming and checking visitors in to Glenbow at The Edison using online and in-person ticket booking and validation platforms.
  • Providing thoughtful, customer-focused wayfinding and orientation information.
  • Front desk sales (e.g., catalogues, memberships and renewals).
  • Demonstrating knowledge of Glenbow’s current and upcoming exhibitions, programs, admissions and membership information.
  • Sharing information and updates about the Glenbow Reimagined renovation project.
  • Answering the Glenbow phone line and triaging call requests internally when required.
  • Managing Glenbow’s general email inbox and directing emails to appropriate staff.Acting as primary steward of the Glenbow at The Edison lobby space, ensuring the area is clean, orderly and ready to welcome guests.
  • Opening and closing the gallery at the beginning and end of operations.
  • Communicating with Glenbow staff when business guests, donors or other key stakeholders arrive at the gallery.

Safety

  • Awareness of all Glenbow at The Edison safety procedures and an ability to implement them as necessary.
  • Working with Glenbow at The Edison’s security team to provide emergency assistance to visitors and staff as required (e.g., calling 911, assisting with emergency evacuation, etc.).
  • Alerting security when appropriate (e.g., suspicious people, unattended packages, disruptive visitors, possible theft or endangerment to exhibition space and content, etc.).
  • Conducting regular check-ins of all facilities within the gallery including washrooms and storage areas, and alerting cleaning staff when areas require maintenance.

Program Support and Improvement 

  • Tracking attendance at Glenbow at The Edison.
  • Providing feedback related to visitor comments and experience to the manager, programs and/or Glenbow’s director, visitor experience & programming.
  • Contributing to and implementing educational or public programs as directed.
  • Demonstrating a thorough understanding of and commitment to Glenbow’s values and messaging, including messaging of exhibition themes.
  • Maintaining relationships with Glenbow at The Edison staff, nearby businesses and partner organizations.
  • Collaborating with Glenbow team members as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills & Qualifications

Education and Experience 

  • Minimum three years of experience working directly with the public in a customer service or public-facing educational environment (museum, historic site or art gallery).
  • Interest or experience in museums, historic sites or art galleries.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following disciplines: education, museum studies, visual arts, art history, hospitality, marketing and communications, social media coordination or other experience in a discipline related to Glenbow’s collection.
  • One to three years of post-secondary education is an asset.
  • Second language is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Understanding of Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, MS Teams).
  • Ticketing system or CRM experience is an asset.
  • Comfortable speaking on the phone and interacting with the public.
  • Customer-focused attitude and initiative in understanding the needs of others.
  • Self-motivated and willing to take initiative.
  • Team player with strong listening, facilitating and bridge-building skills.
  • Exceptional community relations skills and ability to effectively represent Glenbow to the public.
  • High standards of behaviour and conduct in the workplace.
