Part of the BUMP URBAN ART CONFERENCE 2025: MONUMENTS & MEMORY collection.
Explore the intersections of Indigenous sovereignty, the spectacle of city branding, and the politics of placemaking.
As urban spaces become canvases for public art and cultural tourism, questions of land, authorship and belonging rise to the surface. This panel explores the intersections of Indigenous sovereignty, the spectacle of city branding and the politics of placemaking. How do public art initiatives navigate the complex history of land dispossession while contributing to the city’s cultural capital? What does it mean to “welcome” visitors to a place whose stories have long been suppressed or erased?
Featuring Indigenous artists, curators and land-based thinkers, this conversation asks if tourism can ever not be an extractive industry.
