Sunrise Community Link (Sunrise) is a community development organization and resource centre engaged in poverty reduction and community economic capacity building in East Calgary. We work within 18 diverse communities to provide advocacy and basic needs referrals to more than 3,500 clients and their families each year, along with a range of programming in financial empowerment and community building.

We have earned a strong reputation for providing crucial basic needs, advocacy, and referral services that significantly alleviate our clients’ financial and personal crises.


We are looking for a committed individual with experience in program facilitation and a background in the arts, to facilitate a community art program over the winter months. The aim of this program is providing low-income community members in Forest Lawn an activity that is free, accessible and allows them to build skills, be creative, and connect with others in their community. The position is a commitment of six to eight hours per month, with the potential for additional hours required as we build up to launching the program. An honorarium is available to the successful candidate, as well as a program budget for supplies.

We are looking for someone to facilitate this program twice a month, who will be available on a long-term basis from December 2019 through to March 2020. As a non-profit organization, we are continually in a state of growth and change and require this person to be adaptive and flexible. The position would report directly to the operations manager.

Responsibilities Will Include

Program Facilitation:

  • Lead a group of community members in an art workshop twice a month, providing feedback and skills that they can take away with them.
  • Create a space that is welcoming and allows community members to gain a sense of connection to each other.
  • Use program impact measurement tools provided by Sunrise (i.e. attendance tracking, surveys and/or questionnaires) to help Sunrise deepen the effectiveness of this program.

Program Logistics:

  • Using the budget provided by Sunrise, outline and track the required supplies for the program.


  • Support the staff at Sunrise Community Link in promoting the program and generating interest in the community.

As a facilitator at Sunrise Community Link you can expect to:

  • Have access to all staff for any volunteer-related questions and concerns.
  • Be recognized and celebrated.
  • Have Sunrise help you to attain your volunteering goals.
  • Have Sunrise do their best to accommodate any special needs you may have i.e. medical conditions.

The following behaviours are not tolerated and are grounds for dismissal:

  • Accepting gifts or payment; small tokens of appreciation like cookies or candy can be accepted and will be shared with the staff and clients.
  • Using Sunrise as an outlet to promote business, political, religious, or any other special interests.
  • Using Sunrise computers to access chat rooms, pornography, hate materials, or social media websites (including but not limited to Facebook, and Twitter).
  • Smoking on the premises.
  • Abusing any substances while representing Sunrise, or come to Sunrise under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Harassing/abusive language and behaviour.
  • Packing food hampers for personal consumption or taking any donation from Sunrise that was not pre-authorized by the executive director.

Qualified applicants will possess:

  • A means of reliable transportation to get to and from the program space on programming days.
  • Strong beliefs in resiliency and strength-based practice approach.
  • Relationship building skills with the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Adaptive and responsive to change.
