In this information-packed, fast-paced, two-workshop course by Craig DiLouie and Chris Marrs, you’ll take a deep dive into four critical aspects of story: plotting, character, dialogue, and theme. Get ready to level up with an enormous amount of information!
Night One (2 hours):
- Plan and structure stories while respecting the joy of discovery
- Craft compelling characters
- Know your characters intimately before you write your first page
Night Two (2 hours):
- Write compelling dialogue in fiction using nearly 50 tips
- Master theme as a tool to craft stronger stories
- Use symbolism and figurative language to make your stories more vibrant
This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.
Craig DiLouie is a novelist published by major traditional publishing houses, small presses, and indie. He is the author of How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive, which will be released by Hachette Book Group on June 18, 2024. Other notable works include Episode Thirteen, The Children of Red Peak, One of Us, and Suffer the Children.
Chris Marrs has published novellas and has had short stories appear in various anthologies, most notably the Bram Stoker Award-winning The Library of the Dead (edited by Michael Bailey, 2015) and the Bram Stoker Award-nominated A Darke Fantastique (edited by Jason Brock, 2014). More recently, her story, To you I Offer Myself appeared in Solstice in Purgatory (Seventh Terrace Press, 2023) and Pieces of Prue, in Terrace V: Penitent’s Gold (Seventh Terrace Press, 2022). She is an active member of the Horror Writers Association.
