A Rose For Remembrance Call
A Rose For Remembrance is a project that will be developed for 2020/21 and will consist of pressed rose petals with the names of women whose lives have been tragically cut short due to violence; these petals will be encased in resin and will form a larger composition. This artwork aims to commemorate people who identify as women that have suffered the ultimate act of gender violence: Feminicide.
A Rose For Remembrance is a project born from the need to heal collective wounds caused by violence. Like many families in Mexico, Canada, and the world, my family has been deprived of the opportunity to enjoy the company of an aunt, a daughter, a sister, a mother… a woman who should be in our lives and should be living hers. Feminicide disrupts social interactions and the family dynamics of the affected people, which is why I believe that this project will bring together diverse communities to honour the memory of these women, as well as to celebrate their lives.

Acknowledgements
In the spirit of Reconciliation, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that this project will take place on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Stoney Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation Region 3, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.
Also, I would especially like to acknowledge Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes, from the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, for mentoring and guiding this project through a path of healing and reconciliation.
The installation will consist of a 48” x 96” transparent artwork with pressed rose petals encapsulated within it. Each petal will have a name incised on it, commemorating a woman that has been murdered due to gender violence. The petals will form a larger composition in which their overlapping assemblage will create tonal values (shadows and highlights). In order to create this composition, I need the collaboration of the community, who I hope will share names of loved ones to be commemorated on this artwork.
The piece won’t be for sale, but I plan to exhibit it on October/November next year, along with a blessing ceremony and a talk on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls with the help of Knowledge Keeper Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes.
