Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is looking for an organized, professional,and experienced academic accommodations coordinator to provide front-line support to students who identify issues affecting their learning by ensuring they are provided with the appropriate accommodation and services to reduce or eliminate barriers to their education at the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts).

This is a casual position starting as soon as possible until December 15, 2022. Hours of work will be approximately 21 – 35 hours / week.

Hours may be flexible with more hours scheduled during peak periods.

The Alberta University of the Arts offers its 1,100 students studio-based programming that leads to a Bachelor of Fine Arts in one of nine disciplines, a Bachelor of Design in one of two, and an MFA in Craft Media. The Opportunity

Reporting to the director, student services & wellness, the academic accommodations coordinator supports the student services team by working with AUArts students, faculty, and staff to facilitate the accommodations and services required by AUArts students with documented disabilities. The coordinator acts as an advocate for students with disabilities by promoting awareness and information about the Learning Assistance & Accommodations Services for the students of AUArts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the Academic Accommodations process with the student, faculty and staff and determines the appropriate accommodations and services for each student.
  • Promotes awareness and information about the Learning Assistance Resources & Accommodations Services (via the website, SharePoint site, workshops, external events).
  • Coordinates the scheduling of accommodated exams and liaises with faculty to ensure exams are received in a timely manner and students are prepared for exam taking.
  • Advocates the needs of students with disabilities on designated University committees.
  • Provides administrative support functions in support of Learning Assistance & Academic Accommodations including, but not limited to, responding to incoming inquiries as well as collecting required documentation for the development student Accommodation Agreements.
  • Provides administrative support with grant application funding.
  • Prepares monthly reporting on student access to Learning Assistance Resources & Accommodations Services.
  • Identifies and recommends community resources for enhanced accommodation services as required.
  • Maintains an awareness of current research being conducted around accommodations and their effectiveness.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree completed in discipline relevant to disability issues such as education, social work, psychology, learning disabilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience, including an understanding of disability and student success issues in the post-secondary environment and advising students in an academic context.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and monitoring accommodations for academic programs for adults with disabilities.
  • Experience with interpreting medical documentation and engaging in discussion with various medical professionals.
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation including the Freedom of Information and Protection Act (FOIP) and Alberta Human Rights Commission Duty to Accommodate Students with Disabilities.
  • Proven commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the implications of specific disabilities as they relate to a student’s post-secondary success.
  • Strong understanding of the strengths and challenges of adults with disabilities and have knowledge of cultural views of disability.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint) and data management systems. Banner 9 knowledge considered an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate in a clear and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize knowledge and display sound judgment, problem solving skills, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated superior organizational skills, and a proven ability to multi-task and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to apply discretion and handle confidential matters in a sensitive manner at all times.

Compensation: This position pays an hourly rate of $32.84 plus 6% pay in lieu of vacation.
