Two-Day Film and Television Self Tape and Audition Workshop

Date: April 21 222018
Time: 10:00am – 5:00pm

In this two-day weekend workshop, both emerging and experienced actors are invited to advance and expand their approach to both self-taped submissions, and the audition room, with an emphasis on what is needed to book in this market. Participants will work on-camera multiple times each day as they prepare and shoot everything from self-tapes to smaller one-line roles, to more advanced scenes and principal characters with larger roles. Participants receive valuable feedback and insight into their performances from peers and industry professionals and gain practical on-camera experience to help develop the confidence and skills to be successful with self-taped submissions, and in any audition room.

Classes are taught by Tom Carey and Christian Goutsis.

About the Instructors

Tom Carey

Tom is a local Calgarian with over 20 years experience in the film/TV industry. After graduating from SAIT with a diploma in film/video, he started his career as a camera operator and assistant for Alberta’s premier casting directors. A job he credits as the best acting school he could have ever attended. Now, Tom is a working actor with over 60 TV/film credits to date and has appeared in countless commercials and radio ads. He most recently was in Oklahoma and Louisiana filming a lead role in a feature called STARBRIGHT co-starring alongside John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings), Diego Boneta (Rock of Ages), and Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs). Always wanting to share his experiences and help advance and develop Alberta’s talent pool, Tom has also been coaching actors and teaching filmmaking classes for the better part of his career.

Some of his career highlights are roles in: Hell on Wheels (AMC), Brokeback Mountain (Focus Features), Heartland (CBC), Passchendaele (Paul Gross), Held Hostage (Lifetime), Hannah’s Law (Sony), Montana Sky (Lifetime), Rufus (Lonely Boy), Santa Baby (ABC), Painkillers (Badlands), and Dark Hearts (Hooked films).

Christian Goutsis 

Christian is Casting Director/Voice Director at 6 Degrees Music and Productions. He started doing theatre, film, and television at a young age. He has now been a professional actor, director, writer, designer, musician, and acting teacher for 30 years. He has appeared in numerous films, commercials, and network television programs, and has starred at every major theatre in Calgary, as well as coast to coast from Victoria to Halifax, in the U.S, and has toured internationally. He is a multiple recipient of Dr Betty Mitchell Awards, Calgary Critic Awards, and an AMPIA award nominee.

As both a voice talent and voice director, Christian has worked in every commercial and creative medium including documentaries, corporate narrations, radio plays, animations, as well as countless radio and television ads for local, national, and international companies. Christian has been teaching VO workshops since 2008 and has lectured and taught acting classes for both kids and adults since 1992 at various educational facilities including theatre schools, public schools, and post-secondary institutions. Having worked extensively on many sides of the table, Christian offers valuable insight into all facets of the industry.
