Arts Spaces Research Assistant

Summer job opportunity for a returning student with a passion for helping find space for the arts in our communities. This limited term position between May 1 and August 31, 2018 offers an opportunity to hone your research skills, network with space owner/operators and others, and deepen your understanding of the arts spaces ecosystem.

The Arts Spaces Research Assistant’s work focuses on SpaceFinder Alberta, an innovative free online tool that matches people who need space with organizations that have it. This position focuses on research and outreach, including active recruiting of spaces for SpaceFinder Alberta and hands-on support creating listings.

Specific research responsibilities include:

  • Researching potential partners and allies who have a province-wide presence and compiling a contact database.
  • Researching spaces owned/operated by demographic groups that are under-represented on SpaceFinder Alberta and compiling a contact database.
  • Researching spaces in geographic areas that are under-represented on SpaceFinder Alberta and compiling a contact database.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking training on the SpaceFinder technology.
  • Working with the Arts Spaces team to contact parties identified in three key research areas above.
  • Managing, cleaning, populating, and updating an existing spaces database for Calgary.
  • Providing updated Calgary arts spaces data for an existing interactive map.
  • Contacting and meeting with operators of these spaces.
  • Working with space operators to list their spaces of SpaceFinder Alberta.
  • Supporting the Arts Spaces team in marketing and public outreach.

The Arts Spaces Research Assistant will be provided with a work area and desktop computer in the Calgary Arts Development office. They will be trained by Arts Spaces project leaders and will work with the project leaders and other members of the Calgary Arts Development team as required.

Preferred candidates will:

  • Have excellent research skills.
  • Have affinity for data management, word processing and spreadsheet software programs.
  • Be detail-oriented.
  • Be a self-starter who can work independently.
  • Be a strong self-scheduler who can plan work and meet deadlines.
  • Have strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Have tenacity, patience, and enthusiasm.

Note: Some travel via transit within Calgary may be required.

This position is best suited to a student interested in pursuing a career in architecture, arts management, city planning, performing arts, real estate development, or urban design because of the research focus on physical spaces and the arts. The student must be returning to school in Fall 2018. Experience in the arts and not-for-profit communities is considered an asset.

Term: Maximum of 15 weeks between May 1 and August 31, 2018
Remuneration: $18.50/hour; 30-hour work week (office closed Fridays)
