Jane’s Walk Project
Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP) is looking to create a theatre experience that explores community through augmented reality!
We are looking to produce a short innovative play to be featured during the annual Jane’s Walk Weekend in May 2021.
Project Description
We are soliciting proposals for projects that use augmented or virtual reality to provide audience members with a theatrical experience while connecting with their community.
Augmented reality is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities.
We are seeking proposals that would give audiences an interactive, theatrical way to experience their community while staying socially distant!
The successful proposal will be developed with ATP and will be featured during the annual Jane’s Walk weekend May 7 to 9, 2021.
Submission Guidelines
- Performances will be approximately 20 minutes in length.
- The play must fit into the values of Jane’s Walk. We walk our cities to honour and activate the ideas of Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walk is a community-based approach to city building that uses walking tours to make space for people to observe, reflect, share, question and re-imagine the places in which they live, work, and play.
- Emphasis on projects that utilize elements of augmented reality.
- The play will require audiences to get out into their community for a walk, in order to experience the work.
- This work will be made available to the public and is intended for all audiences. As such, obscene, indecent and profane content will be prohibited.
- The piece must be accessible through a virtual medium.
- Due to current health and safety restrictions we will not consider any proposals that require artists to gather in person with audience members. See details about COVID Safety considerations below.
Alberta Theatre Projects is committed to reflecting the diversity of our community. We believe in equity and inclusion and strongly encourage submissions from all artists regardless of gender, age, race, sexual orientation, physical and mental ability, and experience. This opportunity is open to professional theatre companies and emerging groups, non-professional community-based groups, performers, storytellers, etc, with some experience creating and producing performances. Artists must be local!
Artists Responsibilities
The artists will be responsible for producing the piece in its entirety, this includes but is not necessarily limited to:
- Development of the script
- Directing
- Casting
- Props, costumes or scenic requirements
ATP Support
- A $1,000 honorarium will be awarded to the successful proposal.
- ATP will provide technical and financial support of:
- Video recording.
- Audio recording.
- Uploading the presentation online.
- Distribution of the materials online.
- Marketing and promotion of your work, in conjunction with Jane’s Walk Calgary and Calgary Foundation.
Timeline
- April 4, 2021: Submissions due
- April 7, 2021: Successful proposal notified of approval
- April 7 – 30, 2021: Development
- May 3 – 5, 2021: Recording and uploading
- May 6, 2021: Troubleshooting
- May 7, 8 & 9, 2021: Jane’s Walk, performance available for community to access.
COVID 19 Protocols and Health and Safety
The performances will be subject to the AHS COVID-19 public health measures.

Due to current health and safety restrictions we will not consider any proposals that require artists to gather in person with audience members.
Any recording and rehearsing will follow ATP COVID protocols.
Current public health measures restrict rehearsal and recording to a maximum of 10 people, thus proposals exceeding 7 artists will not be considered.
All artists engaged on this projects will be required to review and sign off on ATP’s COVID-19 safety protocols. Any recording and rehearsing must follow these protocols.

What is Jane’s Walk?
Jane’s Walk Calgary has been an initiative of Calgary Foundation since 2008, as part of Jane’s Walk International
They are free, locally-led walking tours inspired by legendary urban activist Jane Jacobs, in which people get together to explore, talk about and celebrate their neighbourhoods. Where more traditional tours are a bit like walking lectures, a Jane’s Walk is a walking conversation. Walks can focus on almost any aspect of a neighbourhood, and on almost any topic you can think of. Walks can be serious or funny, informative or exploratory; they can look at the history of a place, or at what’s happening there right now. Anyone can lead a walk—because everyone is an expert on the place where they live!
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She saw cities as ecosystems that had their own logic and dynamism which would change over time according to how they were used. With a keen eye for detail, she wrote eloquently about sidewalks, parks, retail design and self-organization. At the core of her work and thinking was the need to get out and walk your city and observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging.
