Ambrose University is accepting submissions for the 2021 production of Image of an Unknown Young Woman by Elinor Cook.

This is a university production. The cast will consist of our graduating senior students and select members of the Calgary theatre community. Submissions are open to both non-equity and equity members and an honorarium will be provided. Artists from under-represented or marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply, and priority will be given to Black, Indigenous, and people of colour.

Rehearsal Dates: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,  Thursday 6:30 – 9:30pm beginning January 11, 2021
Tech Dates: March 21– 24, 2021
Show Run: March 25 – 27, 2021

Submission Details

Self-tapes should include a slate (name, pronouns, equity status, the role you are auditioning for) and a 60-second contemporary monologue. Videos should not exceed 1:20 in length.

Callbacks: Tuesday, December 8, 2020, from 6:30 – 10:30pm

COVID-19 Protocols

Callback times will be staggered and all participants (actors and team) will be required to wear face masks at all times. Social distancing will also be enforced while in the callback room, and participants will be required to sign-in and out of the building.

Synopsis

Image of an Unknown Young Woman is set in an unnamed country where the people are rising up against a brutal regime. A young woman in a yellow dress is shot by the police, and when a video of the shooting goes viral, a revolution begins to stir in a country where the authorities will do anything to suppress it.

Ali and Leyla are panicking—they uploaded the footage and now the authorities are after them. Across town, Yasmin is desperate to know if her missing mother is still alive. Halfway around the world, a wealthy woman wants to help. As a tornado of dissent and violence spreads, everyone’s life is going to change.

Roles to be Cast

  • Nia – Former political prisoner turned activist. Runs a charity that helps others escape the country’s brutal regime. (30s to 40s)
  • Candace – Recently divorced and finds her bank account growing daily due to her ex-husband’s guilt. Looking to contribute to a greater cause. (50s)
  • Chorus (seeking one non-binary or male-identifying artist) – Will play a variety of roles throughout the play. Movement/physical theatre experience an asset. (any age)
