Board Members

Join our board of directors, help us use the power of puppetry to impact positive social change!

W.P. Puppet Theatre Society (WPTS) is inviting people with a passion for puppetry, the arts and community issues, such as mental health, education, climate action, diversity and inclusion to join our board of directors.

There are fun opportunities for hands-on participation and also advisory roles in programming, marketing or governance. We ask for a monthly time commitment of approximately 4-6 hours. Preferred board term is 3 years.

Specifically, we ask our board members to serve and/or lead sub-committees that are working on:

  • Governance guidelines and training manual development.
  • Event planning – i.e.: Puppet Power conferences.
  • Budget and finance review.
  • Sponsorship and donation research and implementation.
  • Strategic planning.
  • Inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility organization change training program.

Our mandate to use the power of puppetry to impact positive social change. Our practice is Applied Puppetry. We recently adopted the phrase Courage Journey to describe our programming that supports mental health and wellness – which is of particular concern in these challenging times.

Additional Details & Skills Required:

  • A broad network of business/community connections would be an asset.
  • Regular attendance at Board meetings and fully informed on WPTS operations.
  • A genuine interest in doing impactful work in the arts community in Calgary, supporting and advocating for the work of WPTS.
  • Technical ease with Zoom, Google docs, and other platforms as they come up.
  • Our board of directors is the legal authority for W.P. Puppet Theatre Society. Members act in a position of trust for the community, and oversees the effective governance of the organization.

Certification or Education Required

  • Police Information check is required IF you are going to work with our audiences. We will pay for this.
  • If we are meeting in person all COVID health advisories will be followed, including mandatory double vaccination.

In order to ensure a good fit for both of us, our recruitment process includes a CV review, a phone/Zoom call with other board members and one meeting as a guest member. After initial conversations, training is typically on the spot. Questions welcome!
