Board of Directors

We’re Recruiting! Apply to join Leighton Art Centre’s Board of Directors.

The privilege of Leighton Art Centre’s presence on 80 acres of foothills landscape within Treaty 7 territory is combined with respect, humility and responsibility to be caretakers of the land. We acknowledge the people of these traditional lands which include the Blackfoot Confederacy comprised of the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani, as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. We welcome all people who make their home in the Treaty 7 territory of Southern Alberta and who act as respectful stewards to this land, where we learn, create and build relationships in meaningful ways.

Positions Available:

  • Secretary
  • Board Directors

As a vibrant and open space for creativity, Leighton Art Centre inspires us to explore, appreciate, and create. We operate a heritage home, museum, galleries, outdoor trails and education centre in the Alberta foothills, southwest of Calgary. Our 80-acre facility welcomes approximately 20,000 visitors each year who come to enjoy our exhibitions, landscape and programs.

Responsibilities of the Board:

  • Ensure the organization’s activities align with its established vision, mission and values, and review those from time to time.
  • Engage in strategic planning and the setting of annual goals and priorities.
  • Provide support and high-level oversight to the executive director.

Specific Duties of Directors:

  • Attendance and participation in nineboard meetings during the year. Meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month (no meeting February, August, December), plus one annual general meeting (upcoming AGM is on Tuesday, June 20, 2023), and various committee meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in at least one standing committee of the board (finance & audit review, facilities, fund development, and governance) and/or ad hoc committees, such as capital campaign.
  • Encouraged to attend and volunteer at LAC events and exhibitions held throughout the year.
  • Leverage relationships in the community to foster support of neighbours, members and sponsors.
  • Time, talent, treasure — each are important aspects of the board lending its support to the legacy of Leighton Art Centre.

Term of Office

Directors serve for a term of three years and can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms, subject to the Foundation’s bylaws.

Qualifications

LAC Board members possess an array of professional and personal experiences that help build a strong team of support for the beloved Leighton Art Centre and its legacy. Interested applicants will ideally have some connection to the LAC, perhaps knowledge of a rural museum and art space that holds art, education, nature and history at its core — that is Leighton Art Centre.

The position of secretary must be filled, effective June 20, 2023 (when the AGM takes place). If organizing and maintaining accurate accounts of board meetings is your thing, please share that interest when you reach out to us. Current records have been well maintained and a period of transition into the role will be available.

To Apply

Expression of interest should include a cover letter and resume/CV (in a single document, no greater than two pages), emailed to communications@leightoncentre.org by Monday, March 3, 2023. The LAC Governance Committee will review all applications and selected candidates will be contacted for an interview.

No phone calls please.
