East Village Artistic Patio Program

Expression of Interest (Artists) Deadline: April 18, 2021

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CLMC), the organization charged with the ambitious mandate to revitalize the Rivers District, starting with East Village, is accepting artist applications for the East Village Artistic Patio Program.

Taking place from May 21 to September 26, 2021, this program will transform restaurant patios in East Village into uniquely designed urban spaces that will create vibrancy, respond to opportunities created by the pandemic, support EV businesses and promote local artists. Artists will be tasked to conceptualize a visual/interactive installation using one of the business patios in East Village as the canvas. Seating and tables will be provided by the business.

This call is to artists/teams that work in installations. Artists/teams are asked to apply with at least three examples of work. Upon successful admission into the program, artists/teams will be required to meet with the restaurant owner and provide a draft rendering of the concept and an anticipated budget breakdown. Feedback will be provided on this rendering and budget upon which a final concept will be submitted by the artists/teams for approval, including an anticipated final budget breakdown. The artists/teams will have four days to install on site (May 17 to 20, 2021). The artists will be responsible for the maintenance of the work after the launch (May 21, 2021) and through to the end of the program (September 26, 2021). The artists/teams will be responsible for dismantling the artwork and removing the work from the site on the closing of the program (September 26, 2021).

Ongoing research monitoring key attitudes, consumer mindset, measures of comfort and risk associated with COVID-19 recovery indicates that stress relief, escapism and connection are the key benefits Calgarians are seeking in their experiences. Consideration will be given to concepts that explore these themes.

Land Acknowledgement

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, CMLC honours and acknowledges Mohkinsstsis, and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we acknowledge all Nations—Indigenous and non—who live, work and play on this land, and who honour and celebrate this territory.

Equity Seeking Artists

We believe that the pursuit of artistic excellence can only be achieved if all artists can fulfill their creative potential in the city they live in. This is why we aim to advance equity and reflect diversity. We highly encourage artists from equity-seeking communities to apply and to advocate for this in their submissions.
