Community Mural Project

The Palliser, Bayview, Pumphill Community Association (PBPCA) invites artists to submit their qualifications and portfolios towards creating a painted mural on the exterior wall of our community association building (spray painting encouraged due to the surface), adjacent to Nellie McClung elementary school.

We envision a mural that represents our diverse community, values, and history in addition to creating a connection between our outdoor and indoor spaces through art.

We also hope to build community through engagement in this project. The final product must be suitable for long-term outdoor exposure and may be temporary depending on the needs of the community, the CBE, and funding available for maintenance (minimum lifecycle of five years without maintenance preferred).

PBP consists of three neighbourhoods in SW Calgary, Palliser, Bayview and Pumphill, adjacent to South Glenmore Park and the Tsuut’ina Nation. Originally farmland, houses, apartments, and townhouses were built between the mid-sixties and early-eighties housing residents of all ages and including many senior residences. We are lucky to have many recreational activities through close access to the Glenmore Reservoir, the Weaselhead, Southland Leisure Center, and the Paperny Family JCC and three schools, two elementary and one junior high. PBP is a welcoming and diverse community with pleasant surroundings, connected to nature, that inspires friendships among residents.

The commission for this project is $15,000 inclusive of all costs and includes a $500 initial design fee to present concepts to residents in advance of awarding the commission. The initial design fee will be available to all short-listed artists who are invited to meet and present to the community. The timeline for this project, including engaging with and learning about our community, and painting the mural will be from May to August 2022 and includes flexibility for weather and the artist’s schedule.
