Coordinator, Theatrical Visitor Engagement

Bring your experience in the performing arts to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo as you make memories for our visitors this summer! Our visitor engagement department is looking for an enthusiastic theatrical visitor engagement coordinator.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination of the needs of the theatrical visitor engagement team assisting in staff training for new theatrical based experiences, seasonal surprise and delight, team updates and ensuring effective communication within the team as well as to the visitor engagement team overall.

The ideal candidate is an experienced performing arts professional who can step in where needed to perform but who can also provide support and direction to theatrical staff on a daily basis.

The Role

What you will do: 

  • Coordinate daily and weekly plans and pivots for the seasonal theatrical visitor engagement team with the team lead and visitor engagement supervisor.
  • Delegate the daily operations for maintenance and storage of props and costumes.
  • Understand the on-grounds amenities, operations and services to better support your team and interactions with guests outside of performances.
  • Build techniques, using storytelling, to create memorable connections between visitors and theatrical representations of zoo animals, highlighting the important missions of zoos and conservation projects.
  • Assign tasks and provide coaching and training to the seasonal theatrical staff and volunteers in a coaching focused and customer centric way.
  • Work constructively and collaborate with other departments such as the volunteer resources team to ensure ample support for volunteers engaging with the team and with guests.
  • Gather statistical summaries on experiences to complete end of season reporting on this pilot program.

What you will bring: 

  • Five to seven years of demonstrated experience in both directing and performing.
  • Experience coaching and training staff.
  • Post-Secondary education in performing arts is preferred.
  • Experience in devised theatre and creating original work is considered an asset.
  • Experience in customer service and/or tourism industry an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to walk across the zoo from one exhibit to another, stand on your feet for extended periods of time, and be exposed to all weather conditions and various climates.
  • Some heavy lifting required, pulling/pushing of wagons, and moving of supplies.
  • Exposure to outdoor work in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, or smoke.
  • Working indoors in climate-controlled buildings including hot and humid environments.

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
